“I really apologize, sweetie. I know I said this weekend was only for us, but I have to go again. It was entirely unexpected. “I couldn’t say no to my boss,” David explained to Melinda when he got home Friday night. As she sat in the kitchen, Melinda’s shoulders slumped in defeat.
She was ecstatic about their plans to walk around the beach in Westport, Washington, especially because her husband traveled so often for work. She missed him badly, but she had to accept reality. She also had a job, but it was far more steady and didn’t require any business travel.

“It’s all right, dear. “I guess next time,” she said, moving to kiss him.
David gripped her arms and motioned for her to keep quiet so he could explain. “TELL ME THE TRUTH RIGHT HERE AND NOW!” shouted Melinda.
“I’m going to pack my bag and briefcase for tomorrow,” David said, kissing back.
“You want me to do that for you?”
“No, I can handle it. You’ve already put forth a lot of effort to prepare our meal. By the way, it smells fantastic. I’ll pack, take a shower, and then we can eat and converse. Alright?” He noted this as he came into their bedroom.
Melinda concurred. Her food smelled delicious. At the very least, Melinda reasoned, we’d have a wonderful meal. She was dissatisfied, but there was nothing they could do.
When she heard the shower in the bathroom begin, she decided to check his briefcase because he was notorious for forgetting stuff. She double-checked his wallet and reorganized the remainder of the briefcase’s contents. That’s when she noticed something.
A travel ticket was poking out of the side pocket. She took it to set it over the rest of his belongings so it wouldn’t go misplaced, but to her surprise, there were two tickets. One was called David Sherburne, while the other was called Annamarie Simmons.
Melinda froze, clutching the tickets. She continued reading and saw that the tickets were for Miami, Florida.
What type of company did David run in Miami? Who was this lady? He typically traveled alone; at least that’s what he told her. What was the significance of the two tickets? Why did he deceive her? But the scariest thought that crossed her mind was, “Was he cheating on her?”

The shower abruptly came to a halt in the bathroom, and Melinda unfroze in her place. She entered the bedroom, returning the tickets to their original location in the briefcase. When her husband came out for supper, she pretended as if nothing was wrong, but her mind was racing. She needed to take action in this scenario. But what exactly?
Miami, Florida, on a Sunday morning
Melinda came to Miami without knowing what her plans were. David had departed early Saturday morning, and she had spent the day contemplating the issue. Finally, she snooped through his Google history and email—she knew it was improper, but she was desperate—and discovered that he had reserved a room at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
Her suspicions grew much stronger. David may be cheating; perhaps he has always been cheating. His work excursions might have been a sham the whole time.
“No, I can’t think like that,” she reminded herself, but she nevertheless bought a plane ticket to Miami, booked a room at the same hotel, and hoped to run into David there. She needed to see the reality for herself.
She checked in as soon as the taxi dropped her off at the hotel. She had no clue what room David had been assigned, so she decided to go to the pool area and wander along the beach in the hopes of catching him in the act.

She was losing hope after a few hours of exploring. “Perhaps I should go back and wait for him there.” “I should’ve asked him that night,” she thought quietly to herself as she went from the beach to the hotel. But then she spotted David, and a woman put her arm around him, exactly as she had envisioned.
However, the scenario was not at all what Melinda had anticipated. The woman has to be at least 80 years old. Is David having an affair with an older woman? That made no sense. David’s mother passed away many years ago, and this elderly lady may be a relative, right?
In any event, she needed to know, so she sped up and caught up to them. When he saw her, David’s brow wrinkled, and his eyes almost leaped.
“David! What exactly does this mean? What type of business trip are you on? “Who is this lady? She began, becoming increasingly emotional as the questioning continued.
As other hotel guests turned to look at them, David held her arms and urged her to calm down and let him explain. “TELL ME THE TRUTH RIGHT HERE AND NOW!” shouted Melinda.
“This is Brandon’s mother!” he said, cutting her off before she could scream any louder.
“Brandon’s mother?” Melinda inquired, her hysteria diminishing. Brandon had been David’s best buddy since he was a youngster. He was killed in a horrific accident years before Melinda and David met. But she was aware of how significant he had been to her.

“Yes, Melinda, this is Annamarie,” she says. David presented her to the elder woman, and Melinda washed her sticky palms before shaking her.
“It’s nice to meet you, dear,” Annamarie said with a puzzled grin.
“You as well, ma’am. “I’m so sorry for my earlier outburst,” Melinda apologized.
“Oh, don’t be embarrassed. David appears to have lied or not been totally truthful here. “I’ll return to the room so you two can talk,” Annamarie advised. She went away, patting David’s arm and shaking her head.
David told them everything while they were alone. Brandon committed to caring for his mother on his deathbed, which he did for years. But Annamarie had experienced some health issues recently, and she had supposedly always wanted to visit Miami. David bought the tickets on the spur of the moment, but he didn’t believe Melinda would grasp the situation.
“Why didn’t you trust me?” she questioned, her eyes revealing her anguish at the untruth.
“You’ve been pleading with me for a weekend, just the two of us, and I bought the tickets without thinking. I felt terrible. I expected you to be upset, so I explained that it was a business trip because you never complain in those situations. After all, I know you and Brandon didn’t get along.” David explained, but his shoulders sagged as he realized how illogical his argument sounded.

“So? Brandon remained a close buddy. You are aware of this! I’d have understood. “Hell, I could’ve come with you guys,” Melinda said, her hands furiously gesticulating about her, just outside a lovely hotel on the coast of one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. “This location is incredible. I wish I could have met Annamarie under different circumstances. I understand what Brandon meant to you. “How come you never told me about her?”
“I honestly don’t know,” he said, his shoulders sinking more.
“OK, so we need to improve our communication skills. We shall do so. But I’m going to put this aside for the time being. I don’t want to ruin Annamarie’s trip, or yours, for that matter. And if you don’t mind, I’d like to remain,” she said, staring at her husband from behind her eyelids.
“Really? “You know you’re going to be great for Annamarie because you always know what to say, and honestly, I was struggling with that part a bit,” David said, a smile on his lips. “Many thanks!” Thank you very much, darling! And I really apologize. I pledge to focus on improving our communication. I will never lie to you again, even by omission.”
“Alright,” Melinda said, taking a long breath. She took his arm and brought him to the hotel. “Let’s go find Annamarie.”
They met the older lady at the hotel bar and agreed to go sightseeing. They had a fantastic vacation and arrived back in Westport on Tuesday.

When they returned home, David eventually asked Melinda how she found out about the trip, and she apologized for spotting the tickets and checked his email. Fortunately, he handled it well.
David never broke his vow again after the pair went to counseling. Melinda frequently welcomed Annamarie to their home, and she wept bitterly when the elder woman died a few months later.
“No matter what happened before, I’m so glad you took her to Miami,” she said after the burial to David. David just nodded, his tears welling up, and held his wife passionately.
In a partnership, communication is key. To make things endure, every couple must focus on their communication skills. Fortunately, Melinda and David were able to overcome their difficulties with the assistance of counseling.
It’s wise not to make judgments before learning the truth. Melinda assumed the worst of David after seeing the travel tickets, so she took desperate steps. She should have just inquired and given him the opportunity to tell her the truth.
