The trend of constructing homes using unconventional materials, such as buses, tiny houses, and shipping containers, continues to gain popularity.
These distinctive and cost-effective alternatives offer comparable comfort levels and ample customization options. However, Jo Ann Ussery was a trailblazer in this trend long before it became mainstream.
After her home in Benoit, Mississippi was destroyed in 1993, she embarked on a remarkable journey of converting an old Boeing 727 into a beautiful and fully functional residence.
Ussery’s venture began following the unexpected passing of her husband, leaving her and her two children in need of a new dwelling. Initially considering purchasing a trailer due to financial constraints, she was introduced to the unconventional idea of living in an airplane by her father-in-law, Bob, an air traffic controller.
Intrigued by the concept, Ussery visited the disassembled Boeing 727 and was immediately captivated. Inspired by Donald Trump’s personal Boeing 727, she affectionately named her new acquisition “Little Trump.”

With determination and creativity, Ussery embarked on the challenging task of transforming the aircraft into a unique and comfortable home. Beginning with a budget of $30,000 (equivalent to approximately $60,000 today), she invested significant time and resources into the project.
Ensuring the aircraft’s stability during renovations was paramount, with Ussery strategically positioning it on her property with its nose facing a picturesque lake and securing the tail with concrete supports. After laying the foundations, she commenced dismantling the interior of the 1,500-square-foot aircraft.
With nearly 76 windows providing ample natural light, Ussery made substantial modifications to the aircraft’s design, focusing on improved insulation and installing new flooring throughout. She also redesigned the bathrooms and storage areas with space-saving solutions, resulting in a beautifully designed living space that maximized available square footage.
After extensive renovations, Ussery transformed the aircraft into a cozy home featuring three bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and even a laundry room. She spared no effort in adding unexpected luxuries such as telephones and stoves, with the highlight being the master bathroom boasting stunning views.
Despite the incredible transformation, tragedy struck when the aircraft suffered an accident during a short journey, rendering it unsalvageable. However, Ussery’s legacy lives on, captivating and inspiring others with her pioneering spirit and remarkable achievement.
