As a state legislator in North Dakota, Mary Johnson was more concerned with keeping the city of Fargo operating properly than with her beauty. Wanting her physical appearance to match her accomplishments, the woman rose from her position with the state and landed in the chair of Christopher Hopkins, the Makeover Guy famous for his magical makeovers.

With a dramatic makeover, Johnson transformed from “basic Mary Johnson from Fargo” to “that girl,” leaving her husband absolutely surprised.

Mary Johnson (then 60) of North Dakota retired from her official duties and joined Christopher Hopkins’ salon in 2019. The brilliant stylist, who wrote the book “Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45,” was prepared for Johnson, a former North Dakota House of Representatives member.

The lady, who sat on the standing committee until 2022, desired a fresh style that reflected her professional and personal ambitions. She also intended to surprise her husband, David, who was stunned by her big announcement!

“No purple, no blue, no, none of that,” she said to Hopkins while sitting in his salon chair.

Hopkins shed the years and trimmed her hair into a cut that perfectly frames her freckled face. She also added a little red, combining her natural gray with blonde highlights to bring out her brilliant eyes.

When her stunning makeover was revealed, Johnson was precisely coiffed with a fresh face of natural-looking makeup.

While filming the makeover, another Hopkins customer approaches off-frame and comments that Johnson looks around 42. Johnson, beaming with glee, adds 42 was roughly “20 years ago.” She then walks to the room where David is impatiently awaiting his wonderful bride.

Surely he’d recognize her? He didn’t! As Mary approaches him, his mouth drops to the ground, and he gasps, “WOW,” later admitting that he assumed she was another lady.

“I wouldn’t have recognized you,” he laughs, unable to tear his gaze away from his stunning wife.

Johnson is pleased with her new appearance. “I feel great,” she adds. “I couldn’t have felt better; it exceeded my expectations. You didn’t have much of a canvas to work with, but holy moly, what a fantastic job!”
