Months after wowing audiences on “The Ellen Show” and playing at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, piano prodigy Ryan Wang presented a unique private concert for 101-year-old Dorothy Landry. CBC Music, a Canadian digital music distributor, hosted an event where Ryan, 5, gave a moving performance of “Variations on an Inner Mongolian Folk Song” exclusively for Landry.
Despite being a fan of Ryan’s since he was three years old, Dorothy’s hearing disability prevented her from fully appreciating his concert performance. In order to provide her with a more personal musical experience, CBC Music arranged a private performance.

Dorothy sat in her wheelchair in the small room, with Ryan sitting next to her. Ryan, who appeared to be extremely small, was leaping onto his feet and holding a giant teddy bear. “Grandma Dorothy” couldn’t help but smile with delight at the effect the concert had on her after Ryan expressed to her how much it meant to him to play for her.
In an effort to repay the favor, Dorothy went above and beyond, referring to Ryan as a “very special little person” and expressing her enthusiasm for his forthcoming engagements. She thanked Ryan excessively and sincerely begged him to meet her again after his upcoming trip to China. This one-of-a-kind musical relationship is an example of the global language of music and intergenerational ties.
