Country music’s greatest night is abruptly off the schedule. Unexpected news greeted fans anticipating the 2025 CMT Music Awards, sparking intense online disagreements.
The 2025 CMT Music Awards will not take place, and fans have much to say about it. Paramount has officially paused the annual country music festival, as well as some other significant events.

In a note to workers, Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s head of music, announced that the business is reducing its event program. The decision impacts not just the CMT Music Awards, but also the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), MTV MIAWs, and Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards in Mexico.
“We are pausing a few events for 2025 as we look to reimagine and optimize our events slate going forward,” Gillmer said in an email. He highlighted that Paramount is still devoted to providing “iconic, unforgettable performances and moments that drive pop culture.”
While Paramount’s decision affects a number of events, the cancelation of the CMT Music Awards has elicited the largest responses. Fans instantly flocked to social media to express their dissatisfaction, with some wondering if recent changes in country music played a factor.

“It’s absolutely disgraceful because I was looking forward to that event,” a user commented. “Are they scared of Beyoncé or something?” Another person inquired. They were alluding to the singer’s recent success in country music.
Another person suggested, “They probably decided to call it a day when Beyoncé won her big country award.” Others highlighted significant advancements in the sector. One commenter stated, “Country just isn’t country like it was 20 years ago…” Someone else said, “Good!” The less country music, the better.”
Others argue that the genre has drifted too far from its origins. “I am not surprised. True country music lovers are extremely dissatisfied with what the industry has become. It’s horrifying!! The ‘new’ country music is not really country music at all. “It’s so sad!” one person said.
Another individual expressed delight at the cancellation. It’s not really a country anymore.” Some cited particular occasions that may have spurred the cancelation. “It’s understandable that Beyoncé’s Grammy for Country Artist victory led to the cancellation of the CMT Awards!”

But not everyone blames the singer. “Don’t criticize Beyoncé for recording a CM song; many CM performers have sung pop. CM hasn’t been CM in years. I grew up listening to country music! Also, I believe the CM award should have gone to Lainy Wilson, who deserved it! “It was a disappointment [sic],” one customer wrote.
With the CMT Music Awards’ future uncertain, fans are reminiscing on the show’s rich history in country music. The 2024 edition of the event, held on April 7 in Austin’s Moody Center, featured a star-studded lineup. It paid tribute to country music legends while putting on spectacular performances.

That night, renowned artists like Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar, and Lainey Wilson paid homage to Toby Keith, the beloved country icon who died in February 2024. Little Big Town, Jason Aldean, Trisha Yearwood, Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Sugarland, and Cody Johnson were among those who performed on the show.

Kelsea Ballerini returned as the host, adding to the excitement. She was also a finalist for the coveted Video of the Year award, up against Jelly Roll, Ashley McBryde, Lainey Wilson, HARDY, and Cody Johnson.

Unlike many industry-voted accolades, the CMT Music accolades have long stood out for their fan-driven approach. Carrie Underwood has won the most Video of the Year awards (10), more than any other artist.
Other multiple-time winners include Keith Urban and Toby Keith, demonstrating the show’s importance in honoring country music’s top stars.

While fans eagerly anticipate the return of the event in 2026, it’s undeniable that the CMT Music Awards have left a lasting impact on the industry. Whether this is a brief hiatus or a permanent goodbye, the show’s history and effect will not be forgotten any time soon.
