When Medhat Mamdouh stepped onto the *America’s Got Talent* stage in 2021, few could have predicted the unusual musical performance that was about to unfold. The Egyptian musician introduced himself as a recorder player, immediately raising some skeptical reactions from the judges. What followed, however, completely changed the mood in the theater.
Medhat’s talent is far more than simply playing the recorder. He combines the instrument with beatboxing, creating melodies, rhythms, and percussion sounds simultaneously. As he began performing, the simple recorder was transformed into the centerpiece of an energetic musical arrangement. His ability to coordinate his breathing, fingers, and vocal sounds made the performance both surprising and technically impressive.
The audition became especially memorable because of the judges’ reactions. Simon Cowell initially joked about the recorder, explaining that his own school experience had left him less than enthusiastic about the instrument. But Medhat quickly proved that the recorder could sound completely different in the hands of an inventive musician. The performance gradually won over the judges and audience, turning initial skepticism into genuine excitement.

Medhat’s musical journey makes the performance even more remarkable. He began developing his recorder skills when he was young and later performed on stages in Egypt and internationally. Before appearing on *America’s Got Talent*, he had also competed on *Arabs Got Talent*, reaching the semifinals. His AGT audition allowed him to introduce his distinctive combination of recorder playing and beatboxing to a much wider audience.
By the end of the audition, the judges were clearly impressed by Medhat’s creativity and originality. Rather than treating the recorder as an ordinary school instrument, he turned it into something fresh and exciting. His performance earned four yes votes and sent him through to the next stage of the competition. It remains a great example of how an unexpected idea, combined with skill and confidence, can completely surprise an audience.
