Husband kisses wife’s head, saying five words before giving birth; one hour later, he’s a single father to quadruplets…

It’s difficult to put into words how we feel when we learn we’ll be parents for the first time. It doesn’t matter if we’re expecting mothers or fathers; the vast majority of us are just happy to learn we’re expecting a child.

Our initial thoughts are naturally hopeful. Perhaps we fantasize about how our child will seem or what we will teach or experience with them. Many of us are interested in how they will feel in our hands for the first time.

Unfortunately, not all pregnancies end in the joy that most of us expect when we are children. Carlos Morales, from Phoenix, Arizona, is all too familiar with this terrible reality, and his story is a fantastic illustration of life’s bittersweet side.

Carlos and Erica Morales looked to be a dream pair. The couple began dating in 2006 after meeting at a nightclub in Scottsdale, Arizona, and despite a language barrier (Carlos didn’t speak English and Erica didn’t speak Spanish), they were undeniably attracted to each other.

Carlos and Erica, according to hearsay, spent the most of the first night dancing. When the nightclub closed, Carlos scribbled his phone number on a sheet of paper and handed it to Erica to use as she saw fit.

Erica finally misplaced the paper with Carlos’ phone number, which may have been the end of the story. Fate, it appeared, had other plans.

The couple reconnected, this time through mutual acquaintances, and it didn’t take long for them to realize their feelings for one another were genuine.

Carlos learned English as a gesture of devotion in order to communicate well with Erica. Erica, on the other hand, was learning Spanish.

“Look at these blessings.” Even if they scream their heads off, I want to give them the best kiss.” That’s exactly what I mean…

In 2007, the couple married in Las Vegas and then began trying to create a family.

Their first attempt ended tragically when they miscarried. Erica became pregnant again owing to fertility treatment, and the couple was in for a tremendous surprise this time.

When Erica had her first ultrasound, doctors discovered she was carrying not one, but four kids!

Carlos and Erica spent months preparing to become parents to quadruplets. Carrying four children quickly took its toll on Erica, so Carlos did his best to care for her while still performing housekeeping tasks such as cooking and cleaning.

ABC15 Arizona released an item on March 1, 2015.
Erica was admitted to the hospital on January 12, 2015, for high blood pressure. She called Carlos before he came to say that doctors wanted to deliver the babies as soon as possible owing to her persistent contractions.

When Carlos arrived, he and Erica took photos and videos to commemorate the event. Carlos kissed Erica on the cheek and said quietly, “Let’s get these babies out.”

He had no clue how much that day would affect his life.

According to Carlos, Carlos and Erica’s quadruplets—three girls and one boy—were born by c-section.

“We were so excited to start our family,” Carlo explained to Yahoo. “And then it all came crashing down.”

Erica went into hypovolemic shock shortly after giving birth, a condition characterized by significant blood and fluid loss.

When the alarm went off and nurses raced in, Carlos was sitting at his wife’s bedside. The new father was told to wait outside as medical staff attended to his wife. Carlos was notified that Erica had died one hour later when a doctor returned.

“How could this have happened?” he asked himself. She was OK at first, then she wasn’t. She was here, and then she was gone. The next morning, I went from having the best day of my life to having the worst day of my life. My wife died, and then my four children were born.”

Carlos Jr., Paisley, and Tracey were named following a conversation he had with his late wife. The name “Erica” was given to his third child by him.

The devastated father was allowed to bring two of his daughters home from the hospital on January 16, 2015. The other two were permitted to return home on March 11.

Despite his immense sense of grief and anguish at his love’s passing, Carlos recognized he had to be there for his children. The father-of-four enrolled in baby-care classes to learn how to bathe his children, feed them when they were hungry, and manage their sleep schedules. He also learned how to provide CPR.

Erica’s mother, Sondra Bridges, later moved in with Carlos to help him care for her grandchildren.

“It’s funny how things turn out,” Sondra said. “It’s bittersweet, but it’s been phenomenal, thanks to God and the outpouring support of the public.” And I’d like to thank each and every one of you individually. We greatly appreciate all of your assistance.”
