Britney becomes enraged when she wakes up in the middle of the night to find her newborn boy, Nathan, missing from his crib. With just Nathan’s onesie left in the crib, Britney worries her greatest dread has come true.
Britney never imagined that her life would seem so fragmented. She assumed she would be planning a second kid with her now-ex-husband, Karl. But things didn’t work out for the young couple, and months of constant squabbling resulted in an unceremonious divorce.
Britney was a self-employed entrepreneur who did not rely on anybody, even Karl, for financial assistance.

“Just because you pay the bills doesn’t mean you can stop me from seeing my son,” Karl told her during custody procedures.
People started asking Britney difficult questions following the divorce, but she was having none of it. Britney believed she could bear the responsibility of raising Nathan on her own and was determined to prove everyone incorrect. She didn’t want to confess that she was attempting to prove anything to herself.
This is my boy, and he’ll realize he just needs his mother, Britney reasoned.
“There’s something you’re not telling me.”
Part of the custody arrangement required Britney to employ a full-time assistant to operate the business while she was on maternity leave. Britney became uncomfortable in the house alone with Nathan because, if something happened, she would be completely helpless. She also struggled with her peculiar sleeping habits.
“Brittney, it’s the weirdest thing. You sleep like a corpse. You never wake up. Daisy, Britney’s mother, used to comment, “When you were a child, we would wonder if you were unconscious because you wouldn’t even flinch in your nap to the loudest noises, but you were just fast asleep.”

Britney decided to purchase a high-quality baby monitor to promptly alert her if Nathan began to cry. Her fears continued to grow, as did her sleeplessness and more irregular sleeping habits.
She’d fall asleep late at night and wake up just a few hours later, terrified that something would happen to her son. But when she checked on him, he’d be sleeping soundly with no cause for fear. When she saw her friend Natasha for lunch one day, she had evident bags under her eyes. “I understand what you’re about to say, but don’t worry about me. I am fine. “Everything is fine,” Britney explained.
“Yes, well. I am going to say it regardless. I am worried about you, Britney. You are clearly not sleeping; fine. I simply think things occurred quickly, and you should contact him,” Natasha added.
“Why do they keep repeating that?! They constantly refer to Karl as ‘this’ and ‘that’. It was as though Karl was a shining example of a hero. Britney answered, “I’m Nathan’s mother, and I’m more than capable of caring for him myself.”

Natasha sighed, hoping not to anger her companion.
“Okay, whatever helps you sleep at night. But there is something you aren’t telling me. I will not press any further. Natasha said, “I just want you to know that I am here for you.”
A few days later, Britney awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of children giggling. She struggled to get out of bed and strolled over to Nathan’s cot, where she could see him sleeping plainly in the darkness.
“You can keep acting like you don’t remember what this is really about.” Before falling back asleep, she convinced herself it was only a dream. She made sure not to turn on the light so as not to disturb Nathan. Britney attempted to suppress her worries, yet she couldn’t escape the sensation that something was amiss in her home.
Certain objects in Nathan’s room seemed out of place. While putting Nathan to bed, she left toys in places she hadn’t intended. Britney was afraid she’d seem insane if she told anybody, especially because she’d been fatigued from caring for him alone.

It didn’t help that she needed to gradually return to work, at least part-time, so she wouldn’t lose devoted customers.
The next night, Britney heard sounds coming from Nathan’s room again. This time, she couldn’t tell if it was laughing or sobbing, so she had to be certain. Half-asleep, Britney returned to Nathan’s room. On her way over, she couldn’t hear the noises. Let me just turn on the light to be sure, she thought.
She quickly switched the lights on and off to avoid waking Nathan. When she initially blinked the lights, she thought she saw something in the crib but couldn’t be certain.
Britney swiftly turned on the lights again, and her eyes widened. Rather than seeing Nathan napping in his cot, she just saw his onesie.
Nathan was not in his room. He couldn’t walk or even stand properly yet, so he couldn’t have traveled alone. Britney’s heart fell as she remained still, her hand still on the light switch. Her amazement swiftly changed to fear as she scoured Nathan’s room for any trace of him.

She moved from barely conscious to completely aware as she reached for her phone from the nightstand. She dashed back into Nathan’s room, her gaze darting from corner to corner while she phoned 911.
“Hello, you have contacted the police. “How can I help you?” a police operator inquired.
“Yes, um…” This is my son. “I can’t…” Britney yelled out, “I can’t,” before halting. She had just caught a glimpse of something in the crib out of her peripheral vision.
“I warned you about what would happen next, Britney, but you didn’t listen to me.” “Yes, ma’am. How about your son? Is he okay? “How can we help?” the operator inquired.
Britney cautiously reached into the crib and grabbed a shirt button.
“Um… I’m so sorry; it’s nothing. “I’m sorry I called,” Britney said before hanging up the phone.

She recognized the shirt’s button. A local tailor customized the inscription. Britney had previously purchased a dress shirt for Karl’s birthday from the same tailor. What began as uncertainty gradually escalated into wrath as Britney contacted Karl. He did not answer the phone on the first call, so Britney left an irate message.
“Karl! You’d best answer this call. I know you have Nathan. I’ve already told you. You’re not to see him. Bring him back immediately!” She shouted.
She began texting him furiously because she did not know where Karl resided at the moment.
“WHERE ARE YOU?”
“THIS ISN’T FUNNY, KARL!”
“SERIOUSLY, PICK UP THE PHONE OR CALL ME BACK.”
“Did you have any idea how worried I was?” I almost filed a missed child report!”

After many fruitless attempts, Karl eventually picked up the phone. Karl immediately began to apologize profusely.
Listen, Britney. Listen. I apologize, Britney. Okay? I simply wanted to see Nathan. I have every right. Remember how the courts didn’t award you complete custody? And now you’ve cut me out of my boy’s life, for what? “Your ego?” Karl stated.
“Screw you, Karl. What do you mean by “my ego”? Britney responded.
“Okay, sure. You may keep behaving as if you don’t recall what this is all about. Nathan and I are one block away. It’s time we talked about it. Karl stated, “It has escalated to an unacceptable level.”
Britney waited in the front yard, watching Karl carry Nathan in his stroller towards the house. Britney put Nathan to bed and went back outside to speak with Karl, who was pacing up and down the driveway.

“You appear to have a lot to say, Karl. So, how about you get this off your chest?” Britney said as she took long breaths.
“Fine. You may keep treating me like I’m a villain, but we both know what this is all about. I’ve always backed your dreams. I quit my work so I could be a house husband and care for Nathan. I gladly did that for us… Karl began.
Britney surveyed the yard with uneasiness before responding, “Alright, then?”
Karl moved one step closer before saying, “You got so caught up in work that you forgot about us. You arrived home later and spent less and less time with your son.” I warned you about what would happen next, Britney, but you didn’t listen.”
Britney responded impatiently, almost as if she was attempting to dodge the conversation: “Just get to the point, Karl.”

“Nathan has forgotten you, Britney. He did not recognize you. He could no longer recollect your face or fragrance. You would take him up, and he would wail. Suddenly, you began treating me as if I were to blame. I could tell in your eyes that you were genuinely hurt. But, Britney, I still loved you. That’s why I didn’t fight in divorce court or drag out custody processes, even though you’ve stopped allowing me to visit my kid. Karl screamed, “It’s almost as if you don’t want him to recognize me anymore.”
Britney attempted to maintain her aggressive demeanor but eventually broke down and sobbed. She had been hiding her emotions for so long that she had forgotten how much Karl cared for his family.
Britney remembered how she stabbed Karl by claiming she was in a better financial situation than him and so more equipped to be Nathan’s primary caregiver. She realized how much it must have wounded Karl. Britney began to cry as she faced the reality of the situation.
Karl took another step closer before continuing, “So I pulled myself up and returned to my previous job, but after work, all I could think about was Nathan. After work, I noticed that you hadn’t changed the locks, despite the lights being out. I know that seems odd, but I really wanted to spend time with him, so I began bringing him on nightly walks. I would only take him on short walks to the park and back. That is all. Look, if you truly want me to, I’ll go and never return, but—”

Before Karl could finish speaking, Britney hugged him and burst into tears. Karl tried to calm her down as she struggled to take a breath.
“It felt like I wasn’t his mother anymore.” “It felt like I was a ghost!” She exclaimed, gasping for oxygen in between tears. “Do not go. I need your aid. I’ve been going crazy here without you. I made a mistake. “I’m sorry,” she added.
“It’s… It’s okay. We’ll work this out together. If it’s not for us, then it’s for Nathan. I’m here. Karl said, “I never wanted to leave.”
Britney and Karl began couples therapy in the following months to overcome their concerns. They requested assistance from Britney’s mother, Daisy, and others to babysit Nathan on occasion so that both Britney and Karl could work. They were able to achieve a healthy relationship as co-parents, and their romance quickly reignited.
