In the famous CBS sitcom “The Waltons,” they portrayed the devoted married pair Olivia and John Walton, one of the most well-known television couples ever.
Even though they were always surrounded by children, and each episode highlighted the importance of family and love, their real lives were far from the ideal ones depicted on the show.
From 1972 until 1981, “The Waltons” ran nine seasons and was a treasured family favorite.
Olivia and John Walton, played by Michael Learned and Ralph Waite, resided in the fictitious mountain community of Walton’s Mountain with their seven children, grandparents, and other family members while struggling to survive the Great Depression.
When the show selected them, they shared numerous similarities. They both came from large families, and this was their acting breakthrough.
Despite being a Washington, D.C. native, Learned spent a significant amount of her childhood on a farm in Connecticut with her five younger sisters.
When she was 11, she left England for Austria and enrolled at the Arts Educational School, Tring, which is now the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Tring, Hertfordshire, where she discovered her passion for acting.
However, the role that would make her famous didn’t come her way until she was 33 years old. Waite, who portrayed her on-screen spouse and was 11 years her senior, was likewise the eldest child in a big family growing up in White Plains, New York.
Waite joined the Marines after graduating from high school, then proceeded to college and worked briefly as a social worker before earning a master’s degree from Yale University and becoming an ordained Presbyterian preacher. In his mid-forties, after starring in various films and television series, he decided to become an actor and landed the iconic role of John Walton.

The two hit it off right away, and their onscreen chemistry made them an instant sensation with audiences. She won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Olivia Walton.
However, despite portraying the idyllic family on television, Learned led a chaotic personal life. She married Canadian-American actor Peter Donat for the first time at the age of 17, and they had three sons. It took her two more marriages and a divorce (16 years later) before she met a spouse with whom she was genuinely pleased.
Following a three-year marriage to actor-screenwriter Glenn Chadwick, Learned married William Parker in 1979. In a 2017 interview, Learned admitted that her long-term partner—who she did not name—abused her at home. After her spouse choked her, she decided she could no longer tolerate the abuse and had to leave.

This wasn’t her only difficulty in life; following her divorce from her first husband, she became an alcoholic, which Waite helped her overcome.
“I was drinking heavily before the performance began, and Ralph saved my life,” she said. “Really,” she stated.
She remembered how they frequently went to a restaurant for lunch during their breaks, only to return to the set intoxicated. She quit drinking when Waite “straightened himself out,” telling her she was drinking too much. She traveled to her ex-husband Donat’s secluded cabin on the California coast to sober up.
Waite also endured significant hardships, experiencing three divorces and claiming the consequences were so severe that he could never contemplate marriage again. With their most recent unions—Learn to attorney John Doherty, who is 12 years her junior, and Waite to Kerry Shear, who is 20 years her junior—the two found happiness.
But in 2019, five years after Waite died, Learned finally revealed what people had thought all along: she and Waite were truly in love.

The performers kept their love a secret due to their professional commitment to the program.
Learned explained that they decided not to pursue the connection because it may “get messy” and jeopardize the popular series. Instead, Waite died in 2014 at the age of 85, and Learned emphasized the importance of their longstanding relationship.
“If we had taken that extra step, we would have ruined our deep love for each other,” says Learned.
“We never did.” We gave it some thought, but ultimately decided against it. And I believe that’s why we became spiritual husband and wife; I miss him tremendously. His wife is a very close buddy. However, Ralph and I shared an experience that made headlines on television.
Onscreen, it’s evident how well they get along, but keeping their feelings to themselves demonstrates their commitment to a show that has entertained millions of fans over the years and continues to air on television today.
