Ray Liotta of Goodfellas died on May 26, 2022, at the age of 67. According to Deadline, the actor died in his sleep while filming his current picture, Dangerous Waters, in the Dominican Republic. Documents acquired by TMZ on May 8, 2023, purported to confirm Liotta’s death from severe heart failure and respiratory difficulties.
Lorraine Bracco, who co-starred with Liotta in Martin Scorsese’s iconic 1990 crime film, was among the first to respond to his tragic death in May 2022. “I can be anywhere in the world, and people will come up to me and tell me their favorite movie is Goodfellas,” she tweeted. “They always ask what the best part of making that movie was.” My answer has always been the same: Ray Liotta.” Robert De Niro, Liotta’s co-star, told Entertainment Tonight that he “was very saddened to learn of Ray’s passing,” adding that Liotta was “way too young to have left us.”

Scorsese told the publication he was “shocked and devastated” by the news and pondered working on Goodfellas with Liotta. “As an actor, he was incredibly skilled, daring, and courageous. “He absolutely astounded me, and I’ll always be proud of the work we did on that film together,” the filmmaker remarked.
Liotta was well recognized for his role in Goodfellas and the mafia movies that followed, such as 2021’s Sopranos prequel, and The Many Saints of Newark. He has also experimented with acting on the opposite side of the law, most notably co-starring with Jennifer Lopez in the NYPD drama series Shades of Blue.
“The first thing that comes to mind is that he was so kind to my children,” Lopez tweeted. “Ray was the epitome of a tough guy on the outside who was all mushy on the inside.”

Aside from crime, Liotta’s career ranged from dramas like Field of Dreams and Marriage Story to comedies like Observe and Report, in which he co-starred with Seth Rogen, who praised Liotta as “a true legend of immense skill and grace” in a tweet. Adam Sandler, who co-starred in Hubie Halloween alongside Liotta, remembers him as a “sweetheart of a dad” and “a great funny man to know.”
Despite his love for a fantastic frown, Liotta was not hesitant to have fun as an actor. His resume includes roles in The Bee Movie (yes, really!) and Modern Family, as Jesse Tyler Ferguson recalls for Deadline. “It made us feel so special that they wanted to take the time to come and be with us,” Ferguson explained to the publication. “He was a huge movie star, and I’m just so grateful that he left behind such a beautiful body of work, because that is all we can hope to do with our time on this earth — leave something for people to remember us by.”

I am utterly shattered to hear this terrible news about my Ray.
I can be anywhere in the world & people will come up & tell me their favorite movie is Goodfellas. Then they always ask what was the best part of making that movie. My response has always been the same…Ray Liotta. pic.twitter.com/3gNjJFTAne— Lorraine Bracco (@Lorraine_Bracco) May 26, 2022
Ray was my partner in crime on Shades of Blue … the first thing that comes to mind is he so was kind to my children. Ray was the epitome of a tough guy who was all mushy on the inside … I guess that’s what made him such a compelling actor to watch. The original Goodfella. 1/5 pic.twitter.com/IDbOBPNydY

Ray Liotta has died. His work as an actor showed his complexity as a human being. A gentle man. So sad to hear.

RIP Ray Liotta. I feel so lucky to have squared off against this legend in one of his final roles. The scenes we did together were among the all time highlights of my acting career. He was dangerous, unpredictable, hilarious, and generous with his praise for other actors.Too soon pic.twitter.com/FvsV2NNHkw

Thinking about last October when Ray Liotta was attending an event and makeup artist on crew wanted more than anything to meet him and how gracious he was and how happy he made her that day.

Too sad to conceive that Ray Liotta has passed. If he’d only made Goodfellas, it would be a credit to retire on. But he was incredible in Cop Land, Narc, Marriage Story & much more, especially his searing debut in Something Wild. His entrance at the end of this scene? Perfection. pic.twitter.com/0IhbRuKx2b

Shocked and saddened to hear of Ray Liotta’s passing. Beyond the tough guy exterior and the tightly wound emotions of his signature characters, he was a sweet, playful and passionate collaborator and brilliant actor. RIP. pic.twitter.com/O5tueLlBMP
