Imagine there was someone in the world who was exactly like you.
Someone who bore a striking resemblance to you was also a stranger.
Twin brothers George Skrzynecky and Lucian Poznanski spent their whole lives as strangers.
The BBC reports that the twins, who are German, were born in 1946 following the release of their Polish Catholic mother Elizabeth from a labor camp at the end of World War II.
She grew unwell after giving birth and was unable to care for them, so she had to place them for adoption. Various households in Poland later adopted the boys.

Living in Poland, Lucian was unaware of his adoption until his induction into the army, which must have been a double blow.
At the age of 17, George opened his adoption papers and discovered he had a twin sibling.
In the 1960s, George requested assistance from the Red Cross in finding his twin, but his efforts were fruitless.
“All my life, I just wanted to know my family,” George told TODAY. “For 70 years, I lived without knowledge and believed I would never find him.”
Lucian did not discover he had a twin until he was in his sixties.
Ironically, Lucian contacted the Red Cross, who was able to locate George.
“I don’t care about winning the lottery,” Lucian said. “I just want to have my brother by my side.”
George had no idea his brother was still alive until he discovered that he was not only alive but also wanted to meet.

The two brothers met again at Warsaw airport in Poland, 69 years after their separation.
“I never knew when this day was going to happen—I was thinking one day I’d find my brother,” recalled George. “I couldn’t wait to hug him and give him a big kiss.”
Before approaching one another, the two guys were in tears.
George expressed his hope that this would be the beginning of a really close friendship.
Lucian arrived with the largest arrangement of flowers he could carry.
When the guys reunited, they embraced each other, sobbed, kissed one another’s cheeks, and caressed their heads. Their wives also hugged.
“My heart is overflowing with joy to welcome you back to Polish soil,” Lucian told the crowd.
