The Coachella audience did nothing to dispel rumors that true music aficionados should avoid the event following a somewhat humiliating occurrence during Benson Boone’s performance.
The drinks are pricey, as Coachella is known for its influencer crowd, and some likely come just for their annual Instagram post.
Boone, 22, played in front of a large crowd at the Californian event on Friday (11 April), which is rather surprising given that he has only been producing music for a few years.
While the US singer has some appealing songs and even greater acrobatic talents, he appears to have superior musical taste to most of his followers, as seen by his appearance on stage with iconic guitarist Brian May.
The 77-year-old is best known as one of Queen’s founders, and he showed no signs of age as he sang out ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ while Boone played Freddie Mercury.
However, the audience’s reaction to May’s unveiling was lukewarm, almost as if they mistook him for the man from Top Gear.
While Boone believed that bringing out the Queen legend would give the crowd someone to root for, it seems that many did not even recognize the musician. Unfortunately, the show must go on.
To be fair, the 22-year-old addressed his followers in a now-viral TikTok video.
After singing and dancing with a banana in the video, the celebrity wrote, “Me trying to get the crowd at Coachella to understand what an absolute legend Brian May is and the cultural impact he has on music and THE WORLD.”
Several fans, notably in the United Kingdom, where Queen first gained popularity, were disappointed by the audience reception. Many others thought that Boone would have been considerably better off bringing May out during a British event where people get buried in mud to listen to their favorite bands, such as Glastonbury or Leeds.
One person said, “I can’t believe the reply Brian received. That must have been a major slap in the face for him”. Poor guy.”
Another said, “Brian May deserves a UK audience. That entire performance would have blown a UK audience away!”
It wasn’t the only thing that drew attention at Coachella; Weezer’s bassist Scott Shriner appeared in true professional style, not mentioning his wife Jillian Lauren’s recent actions, and Green Day gave ‘American Idiot’ a whole new meaning by changing the lyrics to diss Donald Trump.
