While many have attempted to recreate Leonard Cohen’s iconic song “Hallelujah,” nothing compares to this rendition. Mennel Ibtissem toppled over a judge’s chair on The Voice France with her beautiful performance of the classic hymn before even finishing her introduction.
Even before the song was complete, the four judges were smitten by 22-year-old Mennel’s soulful gospel and R&B performance of the song, as well as her magnificent voice. Mennel, a Muslim singer of French and Syrian heritage, gave her performance a distinctive twist by singing in both Arabic and English, resulting in a real hybrid of musical styles.
The Arabic verses from Kuwaiti artist Muhammad Al Husayn’s song “Ya Ilahi (Oh My Lord)” were put to the music of “Hallelujah.” Mennel’s cover grew from its original solo piano performance to an eight-string acoustic folk instrument with an exotic lead that interlaced with the vocal melody, providing a new depth to the music.
When her performance aired in France, Mennel, who is of Syrian-Turkish and Moroccan-Algerian origin, caused a stir in the media. Fans praised her amazing voice, majestic beauty, and eye-catching blue turban, emphasizing the importance of French Muslim women’s inclusion in the high-profile competition. Mennel sang “Hallelujah” and “Say Something” by A Great Big World on America’s Got Talent, and the video is accessible here.
