Cameras captured the horrifying moment when Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed within seconds following collision with cargo ship slamming into one of its columns

A significant search and rescue operation is currently underway in Baltimore, Maryland following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge overnight.

Footage from surveillance cameras captured the moment when a cargo ship collided with a support column of the bridge, causing vehicles and individuals to plunge into the cold, murky waters.

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a 1.6-mile structure spanning the Patapsco River, collapsed after being struck by a large vessel.

The collapse of the bridge occurred rapidly, folding into the river within seconds, with the alarming event captured on camera.

Promptly following the incident, a search and rescue mission commenced, with teams scouring the area for a reported seven to twenty individuals who may be in need of assistance.

Kevin Cartwright, the Baltimore City Fire Department’s director of communications, described the situation as a mass casualty incident involving multiple agencies. He informed CNN that up to 20 individuals and multiple vehicles might be submerged in the Patapsco River.

Maryland’s Secretary of Transportation, Paul J. Wiedefeld, confirmed that construction crews were present on the bridge at the time of its collapse.

During a press conference on Tuesday morning, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed shock and sorrow, calling the bridge’s collapse an unimaginable tragedy, likening it to a scene from a movie. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing life-saving efforts.

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski highlighted the challenging conditions faced by rescue crews, including the deep waters of the port, strong currents, and adverse weather conditions.

By 9:00 a.m. EDT, two individuals had been rescued from the water. One person was reported to be in critical condition, while the other was unharmed.

US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that there were no indications suggesting the collision was deliberate.
