When you visit one of the biggest retail establishments in the country, you never know what you’ll find there.
When a different customer she had never seen stopped her, Cassandra Turner Nelson was ambling around the food aisles of the Walmart Supercenter in Alpharetta, Georgia. Before he approached her, Cassandra hadn’t even noticed that she had been humming a tune.
According to Donnell Cross, he got the idea to have some fun when he heard Cassandra humming. As he turned to face his pal, he stated, “I’m going over there and messing with this lady.”
“I was thinking, ‘Is he going to challenge me?’ because if he was, then I was coming for him,” Cassandra said, grinning.
Cassandra attentively listened while Donnell talked to her about singing, despite her skepticism. Then he inquired as to whether she was familiar with the song “If This World Were Mine” by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn. When she confirmed that she did, he persisted and started singing in the aisle of canned goods and salad dressing.

Cassandra kindly listened as Donnell started to sing. His singing voice is lovely and deep, but when Cassandra joined in, the song reached a new level. The woman in front of Donnell couldn’t have realized at the time that her family has a small history in the music business. Cassandra grew up performing as a backup vocalist for gospel shows; her father was the late gospel musician and preacher Norris Turner.
She was a worker’s compensation adjuster when she first met Donnell, but she still enjoys singing whenever she gets the chance, even if it means doing so in the middle of Walmart!
A crowd started to gather as the two sang together like seasoned pros. Many customers flocked to the surprise spectacle from different areas of the store, bringing out their phones to capture this memorable occasion. Cassandra was simultaneously fretting that they were acting improperly in her brain.

She remarked, “I wondered, ‘Are the police going to come get us?'” When the audience turned to face us and smiled, we thought, “We can do this.”
When Cassandra and Donnell finished singing, they chuckled together about how bizarre and unexpected their duet had been, but the shocks were only beginning for this couple. They became well-known online after Cassandra posted the clip online and R&B singer Common posted it on his Instagram.
The Strahan, Sara, and Keke morning program soon requested Cassandra and Donnell to perform. The two vocalists received invitations to Common’s performance at the Apollo Theater and an all-expenses-paid vacation to New York City at that point.
Cassandra expressed her hope that the video will revive the general public’s interest in this genre of music. “We can revive R&B,” someone said. R&B gospel, she cried out.
What a lovely and fortuitous meeting! These two have a great deal of musical synergy.
Don’t forget to spread the word about this lovely impromptu Walmart performance!
