Jason recognized what the call meant but was unable to return home in time. Jason Reid is a very accomplished and prolific individual. He’s founded a number of enterprises while also teaching and mentoring others in leadership.
He has also written a number of business books as well as publications for children and families. Reid even dabbled in filmmaking. He also has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
Reid describes himself as an entrepreneur. And a very passionate father.
Jason was in Puerto Vallarta with his wife. She was celebrating her birthday on March 21, 2018. That’s when he got a call from his son, Ryan, who just whispered, “I love you,” and hung up.

In a panic, Jason and his wife contacted his mother-in-law and told her to “go find Ryan.”
Ryan, Jason’s 14-year-old son, hung himself in their Murrieta home’s attic.
They quickly returned home, but Ryan was unable to be rescued.
His 14-year-old son was ruled brain dead, and life support was turned off. This was after Mom and Dad, as well as two brothers and a sister, had said their goodbyes.
“We never saw it coming,” Reid said.
The family quickly discovered Ryan’s message.
Ryan writes about how he faced a consuming darkness. On the surface, though, he pretended to be glad for everyone. He also wrote about his online investigation for methods to take his life.

Ryan pondered fleeing to Portland, but it was too far away, so he never did.
“He was so troubled, and he was still just a child,” his father remarked.
Post-It notes in one of Ryan’s drawers said, “Here’s my username and passwords” and “Tell my story.”
Jason thought he had done all possible to raise his children. He had to admit that he had overlooked the warning indications of Ryan’s covert, silent fight.
Jason felt he didn’t ask the appropriate questions and didn’t participate in the painful but essential dialogues with Ryan that may have helped his son in his struggle with the dark.
As a result, this parent established ChooseLife.org.

Ryan was often talking to his father, telling him about his day and everything in between. And, as a parent, Jason believed that by being tough and guarding his family from danger, he was protecting them.
But every time Ryan wanted to talk to him, he was on the phone with someone.
Jason only wants to apologize to Ryan. And now he’s spreading the word to others. Telling their narrative and listening to the youngsters.
He has a mission. Jason can only do so if others pay attention. If others share their experiences.
So, the next time a youngster, or anyone, approaches you for a discussion, pay attention. You never know when someone might need someone to listen. Listen to their tale and share yours.

Jason might not recognize you. But he could use all the assistance he can get. Make it happen for him. Do it for Ryan’s sake.
