The designers of the medals for the 2024 Olympics in Paris have spoken out after a number of them were returned by winning athletes due to their poor condition.
Near the end of the Olympics, a few competitors expressed worry over the quality of their medals just days after receiving them, with others displaying their awards that were severely weathered in such a short period of time.
Last year, Team USA skateboarder Nyjah Huston said on his Instagram Story: “After having it lay on my skin with some sweat for a little bit and letting my buddies wear it over the weekend, they’re evidently not as great quality as you’d assume. Even the front is starting to chip a little.”
The medals from the Paris 2024 Olympics were not holding up well when compared to those from the Tokyo Olympics three years earlier.
According to a French magazine, La Lettre, over 100 athletes have returned their medals in order to be replaced with better-conditioned ones.
The Paris 2024 medals, designed by LVMH, include a piece of iron from the Eiffel Tower in the rear, while the front portrays Nike, the Greek goddess of triumph, standing in the Panathenaic Stadium, where the Olympic Games were reintroduced in 1896.
On each side of her are images of the famed Greek structures, the Acropolis, and the Eiffel Tower.
The olympic medal designer reacts.
That is the design of the most recent batch of Olympic medals, and LVMH assured the Daily Mail that they were not responsible for the medals’ actual manufacture.
The business stated that, while they created the medals, they did not produce them.
The Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) was in charge of producing the medals for Paris 2024, and they informed LADbible that they had no comment on the number of medals returned and rejected reports made by La Lettre that three individuals had lost their jobs over the Olympic medals.
They also stated that any athlete who has returned their medal to be replaced will be receiving a new one soon.
According to La Lettre, the cause of the medal’s deterioration appears to be the transition to a new varnish when the previous one was discovered to contain the carcinogen chromium trioxide.
“The Paris 2024 Olympic Games Organizing Committee is working closely with Monnaie de Paris, the institution in charge of medal manufacturing and quality control, to assess medal claims and understand the circumstances and cause of damage,” a Monnaie de Paris spokesperson told LADbible in a statement.
“Monnaie de Paris has taken the matter of damaged medals extremely seriously since receiving the first exchange requests in August, organizing internal teams.
“Monnaie de Paris changed the varnish and refined the production process to make the medals more resistant to specific usage by athletes.
“The replacement of damaged medals has begun in coordination with the IOC and the Paris 2024 organizing committee.
“All damaged medals will be replaced and identically engraved at the request of athletes during the 1st quarter of 2025.”
The medal makers stated that they had produced a total of 5,084 medals for the games.
