Devastated parents of 7-year-old girl who lost her life after hole she was digging on Florida beach collapsed in on her are speaking out for the first time

Last month, the heartbreaking tale of Sloan Mattingly spread worldwide following her tragic demise during a family outing to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach.

Parents Therese and Jason Mattingly recounted that the day had been idyllic until the unthinkable occurred. While Sloan and her nine-year-old brother, Maddox, were digging a hole in the sand, chaos and horror suddenly ensued.

According to reports, the hole they were excavating collapsed abruptly, prompting shocked beachgoers to launch a frantic rescue effort. Although Maddox was buried up to his chest, he was successfully extracted from the hole. Meanwhile, Therese and Jason, aided by others nearby, continued to dig desperately for Sloan.

Despite their efforts, Sloan was eventually recovered from the sand, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

Now, Therese and Jason are speaking out to caution others, acknowledging themselves as typically vigilant parents who meticulously consider safety measures. Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, the devastated parents conveyed their shock, expressing that beach safety, specifically concerning sand holes, had never crossed their minds.

Reflecting on the swift collapse of the hole, Therese lamented the suddenness of the tragedy, stating, “That part just hurts really bad because it didn’t matter that we were literally right there. It was just a hole, and then there’s nothing.”

Jason shared how the harrowing experience has impacted Maddox, acknowledging that he may forever be changed by the ordeal. However, the grieving father affirmed their commitment to supporting Maddox through the grieving process and ensuring he carries Sloan in his heart as he moves forward.

Rest in peace, Sloan Mattingly.
