Granny Claus, also known as Dolly Parton, is coming to town!
Parton revealed how she spends her favorite holiday, Christmas, on the cover of Good Housekeeping UK’s newest issue. She confesses to the newspaper that she indulges in over-the-top activities, such as descending the chimney with authentic Santa flair.
“Every year, I play Granny Claus—I get in my Santa Claus suit and I come down the chimney with my sack full of presents,” she told us. Even though many of the youngsters have grown up, they still expect me to play Granny Claus,” she said. “One day, I’ll be hobbling into that elevator!”
The 78-year-old does not have children with her longtime husband Carl Thomas Dean, but she enjoys expressing love to others. “Now that I’m older, I realize I didn’t have kids of my own, so everybody’s kids could be mine,” Parton said in her 2018 PEOPLE cover interview. “I want to empower children and give them confidence.”

While the inside of her home is a winter paradise, she prefers to make the outside a little more understated. “Tourists come round and look at the outside of my house, so for their sake, it’s a bit less tacky out there, but inside I can tacky it up any way I please!” she tells Good Housekeeping UK with a laugh. “I adorn every room with Christmas trees, illuminating everything with an endless stream of lights.” I alter all of the décor, even the dishcloths and drapes.
Even her dress choices reflect her passion. “I have Christmas lights in my hair—I have them everywhere,” she informs me. “I possess a pair of earrings that emit light, a necklace featuring a lighted reindeer, and sweaters adorned with Christmas lights. Simply press a button, and I will illuminate.”

Parton’s Christmas outfit is no secret. In 2023, Parton shared an Instagram photo with the caption, “I’m always in costume on Christmas.” She also discusses her love of expensive clothes in her book Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones. The “town tramp” inspired Parton, according to an interview with The Guardian.
“She was flamboyant,” the “Jolene” singer told the publication. “She wore vivid red lipstick and long red fingernails. She wore high-heeled shoes with floating plastic goldfish in the heels, short skirts, and low-cut shirts, and I thought she was stunning.”
Most recently, Parton gave $1 million to Hurricane Helene aid when her home state of Tennessee was among those affected. Parton partnered with local companies and Walmart to contribute. “I wish we were all together for another reason, but we’ve all seen the devastation,” Parton remarked at a news conference.
“I mean, who knew in our little part of the country here, where I was born and raised just right down the road, that we would have this kind of devastation?” Parton continued. “I look around and think, ‘These are my mountains. These are my valleys. These are my rivers, running like streams. These are my people. These mountain-colored rainbows. “These are my people, and this is my home.”
