Donnie Wahlberg shares a rare, lovely photo with his autistic stepson, who was abandoned by his biological father

Jenny McCarthy is married to singer, producer, and actor Donnie Wahlberg, whom she met on the set of “Dirty Love” in 2014. Wahlberg has been a stepfather to her autistic son, Evan Asher, whom she shares with her ex-husband, American actor John Asher, since the couple married.

On Father’s Day this year, McCarthy shared a sweet photo of herself, her child, and Wahlberg playing golf with her sister and father. A grinning Wahlberg is seen hanging onto his adored wife in the snap, while his stepson smiles broadly as he poses next to his aunt. McCarthy’s father was honored, as was her husband, Wahlberg, whom she referred to as GOATS (the Greatest Of All Time).

McCarthy met her ex-husband, Asher, on the set of the 1999 film “Diamonds,” which he directed, before meeting and marrying her present husband, Wahlberg. They married a few months later, in September of the same year. After six years of marriage, they divorced with their three-year-old son Evan.

McCarthy’s spokesperson confirmed that the ex-couple had divorced due to irreconcilable differences. According to McCarthy’s story, their marriage soured after the ex-couple learned that their child was autistic.

McCarthy provided People magazine with rare insight into her life with her then-marriage to Asher and their son’s health in 2007, after her novel “Louder Than Words: A Mother’s Journey in Healing Autism” was published. Her book depicts the story of a doting mother at her wit’s end, attempting to manage caring for her autistic child and a marriage that was badly stressed beyond repair.

When Evan, then two and a half years old, experienced a series of life-threatening convulsions, a frightened McCarthy revealed that she was never the same woman after that. McCarthy clearly recalled the day she heard the sad news about her son after physicians had already established he had epilepsy while recalling the morning Evan was diagnosed with autism.

McCarthy may have struggled as a single mother parenting her autistic kid after her ex-husband abandoned them, but she ultimately found her prince charming in Wahlberg.

Despite Evan’s epilepsy diagnosis, McCarthy had a feeling there was more to Evan’s frequent seizures and medication-induced manic and comatose behavior. As a result, she scheduled an extra appointment with a UCLA neurologist, and after a hectic magazine shoot, the mom bear raced to the doctor’s office with Evan.

“I threw on sweatpants and dashed to Evan’s doctor’s office.” A nice older guy strolled in, and  I began telling him about the seizures; he listened intently but kept his gaze on Evan, then he slid his chair up to mine and put his hand on my hand. He looked at me with mournful eyes and said, “I’m sorry, your son has autism.”

She experienced tension in her marriage to Asher as a result of her attachment to Evan taking precedence over her involvement with his father. According to McCarthy, Asher became enraged because he felt neglected. Unfortunately, the relationship was beyond repair since he finally chose to leave before they divorced, leaving her to raise Evan alone.

McCarthy was a single mother for a while, doing her best to raise an autistic kid while still working full-time. When she met Wahlberg, though, things turned for the better. Wahlberg proposed to his long-term girlfriend in 2014.

Fans of the pair were in awe at how the “Blue Bloods” actor proposed. McCarthy couldn’t contain her joy at the fantastic news during an episode of “The View,” when she was still acting as a co-host.

While informing viewers and her colleagues how it all happened, Wahlberg stated that she deliberately included her cherished son, Evan, in the important event. The couple was sitting at home one weekend when Wahlberg abruptly rose from the couch and exited the room. Evan then entered the room three times in a row, each time holding a card that read, Will You Marry?

Following the last post, Wahlberg returned with Evan and got down on bended knee with a shirt with the phrase me printed on it and a large diamond ring. McCarthy answered quickly with a yes and referred to herself as “the luckiest girl in the world.”

McCarthy verifies Wahlberg’s devotion to Evan. McCarthy admits to being concerned about Walhberg’s connection with his stepson as a single mother and concerned about the potential of finding love again, not just for herself but also for Evan. Wahlberg, on the other hand, passed the child test, and the two have developed a very unique friendship since:

“There are no words that even come close to conveying the meaning that I feel.” I’m most grateful for his unfailing affection. Not just for myself, but also for my son.”

Wahlberg has not only taken on the character of Evan’s stepfather, but he has completely nailed it. McCarthy told Page Six about the sweet surprise Wahlberg gave her and Evan for Christmas a few years ago. Doting stepfather Wahlberg paid for Evan’s whole college tuition, and McCarthy had to fight back tears as she recalled the touching moment:

“I lost it because I was worried about having enough money by the time he could go [to college], and you know, [Wahlberg] kind of covered the bills and therapy.” ‘I see that you’re suffering in this area of your life,’ he remarked. I adore Evan, and I want to do this for both of you.”

McCarthy may have struggled as a single mother parenting her autistic kid after her ex-husband abandoned them, but she ultimately found her prince charming in Wahlberg. The adoring husband and stepfather has been and continues to be an incredible caretaker to Evan, and the two’s intimate friendship grows stronger with time.
