Luke Thill, 13, wasn’t your typical teenager. Most kids think about other things besides building houses, but Luke from Iowa is unlike any other school kid you’ve ever seen!
This talented kid actively created his little paradise in a house located in his parents’ backyard. This small project cost him about $1,500, but it’s his dream house. Come and see!
It’s incredible what this brave teenager is doing, especially in an age dominated by smartphones, iPads, and revolutionary gaming computers and systems. He decided to spend his money in a more “traditional” way.
He explains it all on his YouTube channel, talking about his desire to build himself a small house and how boredom pushed him towards this project.
After much thought, long considerations, and significant research, Luke had a pretty excellent idea of how his visualized plan would come to life!
It took him about a year to gather the money and materials for the housework. He mowed lawns, did online fundraising, worked for anyone he could, and generally did everything he could to raise the funds.
Luke befriended someone who knew about electrical work, and they helped him install all the electricity in exchange for Luke clearing out their entire garage—a fair trade.
In his project, Luke used about 75% recycled materials. Luke salvaged many items from his grandmother’s house, and his uncle’s friend gifted him the front door.
The small house, about 89 square feet, 10 feet in length, and about 5 ½ feet in width, has electricity but no plumbing, so there’s no sink or shower yet!
Luke said:
“I liked the minimalism.”
“And I wanted to have a house without a huge mortgage.”
Luke made many short videos to post on YouTube, talking about his project. Many people are interested in learning more about him and his motivation.
Luke received considerable help from his parents in both construction and finances, but his dad, Greg, made sure Luke paid for almost everything himself.
Greg said:
“For a kid, this was a chance to do something bigger than video games or sports.”
“It teaches life lessons.”
The house is a real dream home for a teenager, a small haven where he can express himself and have his own space. It has a microwave, TV, and a loft with a bed; there’s even a barbecue in the back!
Luke diligently does his homework after school in his little house, and sometimes even sleeps there at night!
Luke already has ideas and dreams of building another house, but this time a bit bigger for when he wants to go to college. He also wants to inspire others!
He said:
“I want to show kids that you can build at this age.”
