This heartwarming tale from 2016 is too delightful not to share. In Thailand, a tiny newborn kitten was discovered wandering the streets alone. A nearby family spotted the little one while out for an evening stroll and realized it was unlike any other kitten they had seen before.
Concerned for the kitten’s well-being, the family contacted the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), an animal organization, who promptly sent someone to investigate. Upon closer examination, it was determined that the kitten belonged to a rare species known as the fishing cat, which is at risk of extinction.

The fishing cat, scientifically known as Prionailurus viverrinus, is a medium-sized wild cat found in South and Southeast Asia. Its love for aquatic life, particularly fish, sets it apart from other feline species. Sadly, loss of habitat due to the decline of wetlands has led to a significant decrease in fishing cat populations.
The kitten, named Simba by the family, had only been born a few hours before being found. It was puzzling how the mother could have abandoned her newborn in such a manner, which is uncommon for this breed.

The family quickly grew fond of Simba and decided to care for him. Despite hoping for the mother’s return, it never happened. Instead, they nurtured Simba as their own, feeding him and watching him grow into a magnificent fishing cat.
Simba’s survival is remarkable, given the threats posed by poaching and retaliation killings against fishing cats in Thailand. His story is not only miraculous but also crucial for the preservation of his species.

Just like humans, animals play a vital role in maintaining the balance of nature. Sharing this story can help raise awareness about the importance of protecting endangered species like Simba and ensuring their continued existence.
