Here’s what King Charles’ coronation means for the future of the British monarchy

Buckingham Palace confirmed Queen Elizabeth II’s death on September 8, 2022. Prince Charles, the Queen’s eldest son, was the heir to the throne and became King. Buckingham Palace issued a statement “from His Majesty The King” at the time: “The passing of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a time of deep grief for me and members of my family.” With King Charles III’s coronation approaching, royal observers may wonder what the British monarchy would look like-reigning Queen and without its lon what Charles’ elevation to the throne means for the royal family’s line of succession.

Prince William is the successor to the throne now that his father is King. The line of succession continues with Prince George of Cambridge, William’s firstborn child, who is second in line. Then comes Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, and then Prince Louis of Cambridge. Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince Harry’s children, are sixth and seventh in line, respectively.

A precise step-by-step strategy, dubbed “Operation London Bridge,” is in place to ensure a smooth transfer from monarch to queen. Prior to the Queen’s death, Politico reported that Charles would succeed to the throne as King Charles III as soon as Queen Elizabeth II’s death was verified and that the Ascension Council’s proclamation would confirm succession the next day. Charles was formally declared king at St. James’ Palace on September 10, 2022.

The Archbishop of Canterbury presided over the historic royal ceremony, which was attended by a distinguished group of guests, including prominent members of the royal family such as the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward.
