His spokesperson verified that Robert Redford died at the age of 89.
The Hollywood veteran was best known for his work in the 1960s and 1970s, including classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men.
Redford, who was noted for both his activism and his dashing good looks, directed films such as Ordinary People, for which he received an Oscar, and A River Runs Through It.
In 1978, he founded the Sundance Film Festival, an annual event in Utah, United States.

“He will be greatly missed,” the statement continued.
The Sundance Film Festival is Redford’s proudest achievement recently.

It helped launch the careers of aspiring storytellers across the United States.
“I saw other stories out there that weren’t having a chance to be told, and I thought, ‘Well, maybe I can commit my energies to giving those people a chance,'” Redford said in 2018.
“As I look back on it, I feel excellent about that.”
Redford’s final film appearance in Hollywood occurred in 2018 with The Old Man & the Gun, capping off a wonderful career.
“I just figure I’ve had a lengthy career that I’m proud of. It has been so long since I was 21. “I figure now that I’m in my 80s, it’s time to move toward retirement and spend more time with my wife and family,” the Hollywood legend told the Associated Press before the film’s release.
Redford received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former US President Barack Obama in 2016.

“His art and activism continue to shape our nation’s cultural heritage, inspiring millions to laugh, cry, think, and change,” according to the quote.
Tributes have been flooding in for Redford online, with one user writing, X: “Robert Redford was my fave; it’s hard to believe he’s gone. His performances inspired more of my favorite films than anybody else’s, and I’d choose The Sting over any other picture for immaculate brilliance.
We don’t expect renowned individuals to be decent people, yet he is. “He belongs to the ages.”
A second person added, “RIP Robert Redford.” Terrific performer and amazing director. “Truly legendary.”
Redford is survived by his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, and two children, Shauna Jean Redford and Amy Hart Redford, from his former marriage to Lola Van Wagenen.
