A TikTok video recently went viral after a concerned mom from Georgia warned parents about a dangerous teen trend – getting high on nutmeg, the spice found in your kitchen.
In her video, the mom explained that nutmeg contains a compound called myristicin, which can cause hallucinations in large doses, known as “nutmeg intoxication.”

She shared how a teacher friend found students carrying nutmeg bottles, claiming it was for a cooking class. But their story was quickly debunked.
The school’s resource officer confiscated the nutmeg, leading to the students’ suspension. In her video, the mom jokingly scolded the students for their creativity in finding ways to get high instead of doing homework.

This video sparked conversations among parents, with many expressing concern about the trend. Some mentioned nutmeg sniffing has been around for years, leading to bad hangovers and short-lived highs.
It’s important to note the serious risks of nutmeg intoxication. Consuming too much nutmeg can be dangerous, even deadly. Parents should watch out for any unusual behavior indicating their teens might be experimenting with nutmeg.

While nutmeg is commonly used in cooking, its misuse as a drug isn’t new. Historically, nutmeg seeds were used for medicinal purposes, including as a narcotic. Even today, nutmeg is used in traditional medicine.
Let’s spread the word about this dangerous trend and keep our spices safe. The safety of our teens comes first.
