The northern regions of Russia are completely different from other parts of the country. This is evident in almost everything. For example, the North, the Trans-Urals, and the Far East are the only places where you can find people setting up homes in metal barrels, which are specifically used for transporting sea cargo.

This tradition originated from shift workers, who adapted anything they could into living quarters in the harsh northern conditions. Over time, when these workers left, their strange barrel homes were taken over by locals who didn’t have their apartments or full houses.

From the outside, such homes look quite unattractive. But inside, some people have done real renovations — double-glazed windows, insulated floors… Upon entering, you step into a small hallway, followed by a kitchen and two walk-through rooms — since, in these conditions, it’s impossible to create separate rooms.

These homes still look odd due to their round shape. Northerners, on the other hand, manage to live there and even create a cozy atmosphere, which is difficult in such cramped spaces.
Heating is the primary issue with these barrel homes. It’s quite challenging to set up a system that heats the entire container evenly.

Some people manage to solve this problem and live comfortably in these barrels, even through the harshest winters.
