Patti LaBelle had a hard night on Sunday night when she couldn’t recall the lyrics to one of Tina Turner’s classic songs at a BET Awards tribute to the late singer.
LaBelle, 79, took the stage to pay tribute to Turner, who died last month, and performed “The Best.”
LaBelle lost some of the lines during her performance of the 1989 blockbuster single.
“I’m trying, y’all,” she said after humming a few notes before the first chorus.

LaBelle again failed to sing the right lines during the second verse, revealing to the audience that she was unable to see the teleprompter.
“Whatever, I can’t see the words,” she sang after exclaiming, “Oh, Lord.”
“I’m trying, y’all,” she added again.

Unsurprisingly, LaBelle, well known for her 1986 song “On My Own” with Michael McDonald, was chastised for her performance on social media.
“No way. I love Patti, but she should have skipped this one.” What a shambles of a tribute,” one spectator tweeted.
“You SHOULD KNOW THE WORDS,” another viewer said.
Another person called the tribute a “wild shame.”
“Patti LaBelle forgetting the lyrics to Tina Turner’s Simply the Best during a Tina Turner tribute is the wild business to me,” they remarked.
According to a BET spokeswoman, “The teleprompter was obstructed due to the crowd’s enthusiasm, obscuring Ms. LaBelle’s view of the lyrics.” Nonetheless, we can’t thank Ms. LaBelle enough for donating her amazing gift at this time.”
According to the spokesman, they were thrilled to pay homage to Turner, and “having the incomparable Ms. Patti LaBelle on our stage honoring one of her contemporaries was an equal privilege.”

Turner passed away on May 24, 2023. She was 83 years old.
In a statement, her family stated she “died peacefully” in Switzerland following a “long illness.”
“With her music and boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” said a message on her Instagram profile. “Today we say farewell to a dear friend who has left us her greatest work: her music.” Our deepest sympathies go out to her family. Tina, we shall miss you very much.”
Following her passing, LaBelle posted a photo of Turner on her Instagram profile, referring to her as the “Queen of Rock & Roll.”
“Tina, the world will be forever grateful for your voice, fearlessness, and grace!” she wrote. “Your spirit will reign eternally!” “May you rest in eternal peace and love!”
