Throughout the nine months of pregnancy, a mother’s heart is filled with joy, expectation, and a hint of worry. Expectant parents always hope for the arrival of a healthy and joyful baby. Unfortunately, life does not always go according to plan.
Jennie Wilklow, from Highland, New York, was looking forward to seeing her daughter. Jennie and her husband were overjoyed as they greeted their new baby. With many ultrasounds and medical visits, everything appeared to be on track for a healthy baby. Little did they realize that their beloved Anna would be born with a condition that would permanently alter their life.

Jennie underwent a C-section at 34 weeks to deliver Anna. When the doctors placed the baby in her arms, she stared into Anna’s eyes and felt an overwhelming sense of love. Everything looked to be fine with their beloved child. However, when Jennie’s husband visited her, his quiet and worried manner sent shivers down her spine.
“My husband’s silence frightened me,” Jennie told Mom. “I pressed him for further information, and he sat there in disbelief.” With a heavy heart, he added, “It’s bad.”
Jennie couldn’t figure out what those phrases meant at the moment. Her mind raced, wondering what was wrong.

Anna developed harlequin ichthyosis, a rare condition distinguished by the emergence of thick, diamond-shaped plates with big fissures. “As they desperately tried to help her, her delicate skin hardened within seconds of birth,” Jennie told me.
The hardening was followed by serious splitting, leaving her with open sores all over her body. Despite the doctors’ fears about Anna’s life, she beat the odds and flourished. “She embodied pure beauty,” Jennie proudly said.
Harlequin ichthyosis cannot be treated. Managing the disease requires a persistent effort, such as frequent showers and regular skin moisturization. “I would apply Vaseline to her every few hours, and I would wash her for hours. “I imagined all the wonderful costumes my baby would wear, which may seem frivolous but was one of the hardest parts for me, “Jennie said.

To raise awareness about this sickness, Jennie started an Instagram feed called “Harlequin Diva” and uploaded photos from Anna’s experience. Her blog posts shed light on the day-to-day struggles of raising a child with harlequin ichthyosis.
“Anna won many people’s hearts because she embodies perfection in its purest form.” These routine chores come naturally to Jennie. “The world celebrates with us with each new milestone,” she told Cafe Mom.

She said, “I now realize that Anna was given to me because of my love for my daughter.” We were meant for one another, and together, we shall change the world’s idea of genuine beauty.”
Anna is stunning just the way she is, and she is blessed to have parents who go above and beyond to ensure she has a joyful life. Let’s help spread the word about Anna’s story by sharing this article with our Facebook friends.
