Jennifer Lopez reacts to Puerto Rico’s ‘garbage’ remarks at Kamala Harris rally

Jennifer Lopez is standing up for Puerto Ricans.

On Thursday, October 31, the Atlas actor backed Kamala Harris at her Las Vegas campaign event while criticizing the Trump campaign over comic Tony Hinchcliffe’s racially inflammatory comments at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, October 27.

“At Madison Square Garden, he reminded us who he really is and how he really feels,” Lopez, 55, said of Trump during her address. “It wasn’t only Puerto Ricans that were upset that day, okay? It was every Latino in this nation, humanity, and everyone with good character who was affected.

The singer and actress, whose parents, Guadalupe “Lupe” Rodríguez and David Lopez, were both born in Puerto Rico, stated that Trump has “consistently worked to divide us,” but she emphasized her belief in the “power of Latinos” and “the power of all our votes.”

Lopez’s comments came after Hinchcliffe referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” during Donald Trump’s New York City event.

In her statement, she also expressed her emotions as a “proud daughter” of Puerto Rico, a US island territory. She continued by asserting that “we are Americans” and “this is our country too,” thereby emphasizing the importance of exercising our right to vote.

“I told myself I wouldn’t become emotional. ” You know what? “We should be emotional,” Lopez said. “We should be upset. We should be afraid and indignant.” We should.

“Our suffering matters. “We matter,” she said. “You matter. “Your voice and vote are important.”

Lopez is the latest celebrity to call out Hinchcliffe and the Trump campaign for their statements. On Oct. 28, Sunny Hostin, the Puerto Rican anchor for The View, responded on behalf of her fellow residents, stating, “We disapprove of the remarks made about Puerto Rico.”

“And we know how to remove the trash, Donald Trump—trash that has been accumulating since 2016, and that’s you, Donald Trump,” she replied.

Nicky Jam, a reggae musician who attended a Trump event last month, similarly repudiated his support for the Republican nominee in a video, stating, “Never in my life did I think that one month later there would be a comedian who would criticize my country and speak poorly of it.”

He stated, “We should respect Puerto Rico.”

According to CNN, Harris’ team responded to Hinchcliffe’s statements by publishing Spanish-language advertising that stated Puerto Rico “is an island of scientists, poets, educators, stars, and heroes.” The advertising continued, “We are not trash; we are more.”

The Trump team has also sought to disassociate itself from Hinchcliffe in the days since the event. Campaign spokesman Danielle Alvarez also stated in a statement to CNN that the comedian’s “joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”
