Aber served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA) from 2021 to 2025, after being nominated by former President Joe Biden.
Shortly before Donald Trump took the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States earlier this year, Aber resigned from his prominent position.

According to the US Department of Justice’s website, Aber supervised a staff of roughly 300 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel across four divisions situated in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News ‘that served ‘nearly six million inhabitants’ throughout the district.
Erik S. Siebert, the current US Attorney for EDVA, has subsequently addressed her demise.

“We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all-too-brief time in this world,” according to him. “Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard.”

Despite being ‘devastated’ by the ‘loss,’ Siebert noted that the EDVA ‘would look to [Aber’s] example and attempt to live up to her level.
The declaration concluded, “We remain committed to her life’s work, a commitment to seeking justice, as she would have wanted.”
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also reacted on Twitter, stating, “I am heartbroken to learn of the loss of Jessica Aber, whose career in public service includes US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and whose work with Ceasefire Virginia saved more lives than we may ever know.
“Our thoughts and our prayers are with her family this week.”
