Justice served: Marianne Bachmeier: ‘I did it for you, Anna’

Marianne Bachmeier took justice into her own hands when her daughter, Anna, aged 7, was tragically murdered on May 5, 1980. The perpetrator, Klaus Grabowski, confessed to the crime and stood trial for Anna’s murder, while also facing allegations of sexual assault. Despite Grabowski’s denial of the latter, his previous record for child molestation raised suspicions.

Unconvinced that imprisonment was sufficient punishment for her daughter’s killer, Bachmeier intervened during Grabowski’s trial on March 4, 1981. Armed with a .22-caliber Beretta pistol, she fired eight shots, six of which struck Grabowski, resulting in his death on the courtroom floor.

Witnesses reported Bachmeier’s vocal expressions of anger towards Grabowski, including her desire to shoot him in the face and labeling him a ‘pig.’ Subsequently, Bachmeier faced trial for Grabowski’s murder, earning her the moniker of Germany’s ‘Revenge Mother.’

The legality and morality of Bachmeier’s actions sparked intense debate. While some sympathized with her desire for retribution, others questioned the justification of taking the law into her own hands. Bachmeier was ultimately convicted of premeditated manslaughter in 1983, receiving a six-year sentence, of which she served half before release.

Despite the unlawfulness of her actions, many parents empathized with Bachmeier’s plight, expressing understanding and even support for her actions. A reconstruction of the courtroom incident resurfaced on YouTube in 2022, prompting widespread commentary highlighting Bachmeier’s enduring legacy and the depth of her pain and suffering.
