The wood steps squeaked. As Kara and Aaron entered their new home’s basement, dust and the musty smell of mold assailed their senses. Debris, broken furniture, and old crates were all over the place.
Do you believe the elderly woman who gave us the house at a discount only wanted us to remove her trash? Aaron scowls.
What matters? Some of this stuff could be valuable, Kara muttered.
Aaron sighed and nodded before helping his wife begin cleaning the cellar of their new house. Aaron found a curious wooden door in the basement wall after hours of dirty work.
Come on, Kara! Look at this! he yelled. I discovered something.

Fear gripped the couple’s nerves as they ventured inside the crumbling wooden door out of curiosity.
“Careful…” Aaron shivered at Kara’s scared tone as she murmured.
They noticed a sizable wooden trunk resting in the center of the cellar, covered in cobwebs and dust, as she leaned closer and flashed the spotlight across the unsettling blackness.
“What a strange chest that is!” Aaron scowled. What do you believe is inside?
“Let’s crack it open—there’s only one way to find out!” Kara continued, her eyes glistening with delight.

Aaron finally broke the box open after much struggle, only to jump back in disbelief and shock.
He added, grasping a little porcelain figure in his icy hands, “I guess we found the old woman’s collection of antique figurines.”
The moment Kara snatched the figurine out of Aaron’s fingers, her face started to bleed.
She trembled and replied, “Babe, we need to see what else is in there.” If I’m correct, we’ve discovered a true gem.

Meissen, and look at that! “Dresden Lace,” Sighed, Kara. They are really lovely. I want to keep them all.
But Aaron rejected Kara’s suggestion and exclaimed in surprise. God, oh God! I simply did a web search. These miniatures can be worth a million dollars or more. However, how did they get into this cellar?
Do you believe that they were stolen? Kara questioned.
They believed the riches they had didn’t likely belong to a woman who had sold her home for a little. Following a lengthy conversation, Aaron and Kara agreed to sell the figurines in Pennsylvania in order to pay off all of their obligations and begin a new life.

After making a decision, Kara stayed behind to clean the house while Aaron left on his own, carrying the massive treasure in the trunk of his car.
After passing Lake Milton, his phone rang unexpectedly 30 minutes later.
She said, “Honey, there was a…” Kara sobbed while panting. A thief was present in the home. I entered the basement with your gun.
As Aaron parked his car at the curb, his heart began to race. “What? You’re all fine, right?
Kara cried out. “Yeah. I fired the gun as he ran at me. He fled in fear. He quickly retreated outside the window. However, honey, he was looking in the precise area where we discovered the chest the previous evening.
“What? Lock every door. Fearfully yelling, “I’m coming,” Aaron hastily turned around and rushed home.

As soon as he got home, Aaron gave Kara a big embrace and said, “It’s okay. I’m here. It’s okay.” She was just too scared.
Aaron considered leaving the figurines somewhere for the stranger who broke into their home to find, but he later had second thoughts.
Aaron said, “This house is ours, and everything inside is also ours.” “I’m not letting him get what we found because of how he terrified you, and I believe I have a solution so we can still preserve the prize.
Aaron came up with a strategy to ensure that the thieves or whoever was chasing the figurines would never return to hunt for them. Aaron declared with assurance, “We’ll relocate to a new city…and start over with the money we generate from selling the figurines.
“Yeah! Kara said with a sly smirk, “And that’s only feasible if these scumbags think the figurines were destroyed.

Later that evening, the couple exchanged their old porcelain dishes and cups for the figurines in the chest. Going from room to room, they sprayed practically all of their combustible substances, including gasoline, on the furnishings.
Aaron lit his lighter and threw it into the house after declaring their clever scheme successful. He stated this as he and Kara raced to their car and left their blazing home. “I wish we didn’t have to do this,” he added.
It will be hard to distinguish the broken and burned ceramic items within from those figures. Aaron nodded from behind the wheel as Kara giggled.
They spent the night at a hotel along the highway, where they made plans for the future while holding onto the tragic fortune. But Kara wasn’t sure whether it would actually work, for some reason.

Have we gone too far, baby? Aaron caught Kara’s attention as they entered their hotel room.
Why, I don’t believe so! We are simply assisting ourselves, Aaron added.
Kara sighed with remorse and choking anxiety. “But it’s not like those figurines are really ours,” she said. What if they had been taken? We should report them to the police.
“Really? Aaron answered, “I don’t believe so. We’ve come too far, Kara, to go back now. We’ll sell these figurines, use the proceeds to purchase a cute little house, and then carry on.
Kara agreed, but something concerned her as she considered how their lives might alter drastically over night.
“We burned down our house today. What will happen tomorrow? What if the men who are looking for riches show up? She fixed her gaze intently on Aaron’s eyes.

“I’m aware, baby. But wouldn’t you want our ideal home? Something modest and inviting where we might make a fresh start, have children, and live happily ever after? said Aaron.
Kara grabbed Aaron’s hand and said, “Of course, I do, honey.” I’m just suggesting that perhaps we should put an end to everything before it’s too late. It’s better to put an end to things now rather than regret it later.”
“You’re just thinking too much.” To reassure Kara, Aaron gave her a soft kiss on the forehead. But I can hear you, okay? We’re almost done with this transaction. We’ll depart this location tomorrow once I sell those figurines.
The next morning, Aaron left Kara at the motel and went to a local antique shop with the figurines.
How did you obtain these, um? As he examined the information carved on the ceramic objects, Mr. Finch, the antique merchant, questioned them with skepticism.

Aaron felt an odd feeling creep up his stomach. But he remained composed and gave Mr. Finch a direct gaze. Oh, those were a part of my late grandmother’s collection, he explained.
Aaron’s brows rose in surprise as Mr. Finch added, “Hmm. I’ll give you $200 for the figurines and $10,000 for the entire collection.”
“What? “You can’t be serious,” Aaron said, dismissively nodding. If you aren’t willing to spend the hundreds of thousands it is worth, I’ll find another buyer.
Mr. Finch took Aaron by the shoulder and said, “It’s not an offer. I am aware that these figurines were taken. I’ll call the police if you don’t sell them to me for $10,000.

In an effort to hide his terror, Aaron plastered a grin onto his lips while his face contorted with disbelief. You’re wrong, of course. “I have to leave,” he replied.
Oh, no, I’m not. Now you have the ball in your court. To make a decision, you have until this evening, Mr. Finch replied.
Aaron raced out of the store with the box of miniatures without responding.
“Darn! What happens if Mr. Finch joins the thieves? He would assure them that the fire did not damage the figurines. Aaron grumbled as he rushed to the motel, “Kara and I should leave this place right away.
But as he hurried to his room, he received a shocking surprise. Kara didn’t attend. There were clothes all over the floor. The pillows and mattress were cut open. Additionally, the TV had a sticky note on it.
“Follow our instructions exactly if you want your lady back alive.”

As Aaron read the following, he began to perspire.
At midnight, bring the figurines to the vacant warehouse on Elm Street. Avoid attempting to be clever and call the police. Or you’ll pay for your disobedience with Kara. If you follow the instructions, you’ll receive 25% of the figurines’ worth.
Aaron’s remorse at leaving Kara alone was like a rock moving in the wrong direction.
He drove back to the antique shop just as Mr. Finch closed it up, crumpling the letter and putting it in his pocket.
Oh, I see you made a good choice, Mr. Finch said with a devilish grin.

Mr. Finch opened the door to the antique shop and motioned for Aaron to enter. “Now, give me the money,” Aaron requested.
One by one, he examined every square inch of the figurines and then penned a check for $10,000.
Aaron grinned, “It was a pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Finch,” as he sped past the shop to Elm Street to collect his scores with the men who had kidnapped Kara.
An hour later, Aaron entered the pitch-black warehouse outside of town with a pounding in his chest. He glanced inside and noticed that Kara was surrounded by thugs.

“Aaron!” As Kara sobbed, she made an effort to go to Aaron. But compared to the intimidating guy who stopped her, her strength was nothing.
Not so quickly, woman! The goods are where? He turned to face Aaron.
Aaron lied and said, “It’s in the car.” I first wanted to see my wife.
“Well, now that you’ve seen her, The guy came up to Aaron and said, “Now go get our stuff.”
Outside, police sirens suddenly started to sound. “Attention! The cops are involved in this. You are surrounded by us. Over a megaphone, a commanding officer said, “Drop your weapons and get on the ground.

Kara and Aaron were waiting for a police update when they entered the police station a half-hour later.
I don’t understand why you did this. Kara frowned as she turned to face Aaron.
Remember, it’s preferable to stop early. said, Aaron. “When I noticed that Kara was gone, I felt more fear than I ever have in my whole life. I simply carried out your instructions. I called the police and helped them in their effort to apprehend these scumbags.
But I had to stop briefly en route to make sure the antique trader received his sentence. Aaron laughed.

A short while later, a policeman called Aaron and Kara to get their statements before revealing shocking information to them.
The officer said, “The kingpin of this enterprise is the grandson of the elderly woman you purchased the property from. Before it was too late for him to get back his stolen figurine collection that he had borrowed from a private collector, he was unaware that she would sell her home.
Aaron and Kara were shocked and disappointed when the officer continued, “We have a charge of arson to discuss, don’t we?”
The officer turned to face Aaron and Kara and informed them that the inspectors had examined their property and had found evidence of arson. Charges must be pressed, she said.
