Kate Middleton made her first public appearance in six months at King Charles’ birthday parade amid her cancer treatment

The 42-year-old Princess of Wales saw Trooping the Colour on June 15; she hasn’t seen the royal family in public since Christmas.

She, her husband, Prince William, and their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6, joined King Charles, who is also undergoing cancer treatment, Queen Camilla, and other royals for the monarch’s annual birthday parade on the balcony of the royal residence, which culminated in the day’s grand finale: the Royal Air Force’s flypast over London.

Princess Kate participated in the royal processional earlier in the day, riding in a horse-drawn carriage with her three children. Jenny Packham adorned her white dress with the Irish Guards Regimental Brooch, and Philip Treacy paired it with a hat.

Except for 2020 and 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the event’s cancellation, the Princess of Wales has participated in Trooping the Colour every year since marrying Prince William in 2011.

After receiving a cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Kate is undergoing chemotherapy. On June 14, she provided an update on her health, saying in a private message that she is “making good progress” but experiences “good days and bad days.”

“On bad days, you have to give in to your body’s need for rest because you feel weak and exhausted. However, you want to make the most of feeling well on your positive days when you’re feeling stronger, the speaker stated.

According to the Princess of Wales, she will get cancer treatment for “a few more months.”

The day before Trooping the Colour, she released a statement saying, “I’m excited to join my family in the King’s Birthday Parade this weekend and hope to attend a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.”

“I’m getting better at having patience, especially when something is unclear. I am embracing each day as it comes, paying attention to my health, and granting myself permission to use this crucial time for healing. I am grateful for your unwavering understanding and the courage with which you have all shared your stories with me.

Kate has been keeping a quiet profile since announcing her diagnosis in March, but insiders told PEOPLE that she was recently seen out and about with her family and doing errands by herself. In a statement sent on June 14, the Princess of Wales stated that she is “starting to do a little work from home” and that she “hopes to join a few public engagements over the summer.”

She hasn’t been given a deadline to fully resume her royal duties, so any outings in the upcoming months will depend on her condition and the advice of her medical staff.
