After 18 years of marriage, Kevin Costner, 68, and Christine Baumgartner, 49, are splitting. The pair married in 2004 at Costner’s Colorado ranch and had three children together. Here’s a detailed history of their relationship, from when they met on a golf course in the 1990s until now.
When Costner was rehearsing for his role in the 1996 film “Tin Cup,” he met Baumgartner on a golf course.

When he and Baumgartner, who is 19 years his junior, were introduced, the Academy Award-winning director and actor was practicing his birdies and bogeys in preparation for his role as a golf prodigy in the 1996 romantic comedy. She was working as a model at the time.
Meanwhile, Costner was married to his first wife, Cindy Silva, whom he met and married while still in college.
They had three children during their 16-year marriage: Annie, 39; Lily, 36; and Joe, 35.
Costner had many previous relationships before marrying Baumgartner after their marriage ended in 1994.
During his brief engagement with Bridget Rooney, cal activist Birgit Cunningham and supermodel Elle Macpherson he dated Politi, with whom he fathered a son called Liam, 26.
Costner and Baumgartner didn’t cross paths again until 1998, at a restaurant.

They began dating shortly after meeting, some years after their initial experience.
Costner told People in 2003, “We swapped numbers, and I told her that I would — did she mind if I phoned her in two weeks?” I had no idea that was an insult to a lady.”
After four years together, the pair split in 2002 because they couldn’t agree on their plans.

According to the “Field of Dreams” star, they called it quits for a while due to a disagreement about having children.
While Costner, a father of four, did not want any more children, becoming a mother was a deal-breaker for Baumgartner.
In an interview with Parade in 2008, Costner remarked on their divorce: “For years, fear prohibited me from marrying Christine.” Christine desired a child, but I was concerned that I would be ineffective as a parent.”
However, he stated that he was able to quiet his concerns in order for their relationship to work.
“I woke up thinking, ‘Am I going to lose a beautiful lady who is eager to stay with me till my last breath because I am frightened to say yes to a child?'” he explained.
“That was all it needed,” he explained. “I resolved that I would not lose out on love.”
In September 2004, the pair married on Costner’s 165-acre Colorado ranch.

On September 25, 2004, the pair married in a ceremony at the actor-director’s enormous 165-acre estate just outside of Aspen, Colorado.
According to People, Costner came in a horse-drawn carriage while his bride arrived in a vintage green pickup truck to the riverside wedding.
According to CBS, there were around 300 guests in attendance, and according to People, Tim Allen and Don Johnson were among them.
Baumgartner said in 2005 that it was Costner who encouraged her to start her handbag design company.

Baumgartner developed the designer laptop case label Cat Bag Couture in the early 2000s.
“When I came up with some examples, I presented them to Kevin, and he thought they were gorgeous and outstanding,” she told the Denver Post in 2005.
“He told me I should take it to the next stage, and he’d assist me,” she added. I’ve always enjoyed fashion and style, and combining these with practicality is ideal.”
The couple had three children together between 2007 and 2010.

Cayden, their first child, was born in May 2007. Costner was 52 at the time and expressed concerns about becoming an older father.
“I hope I have as much energy for Cayden as I did for my first,” he told People, adding that he is afraid “someone else will raise him, which means my life will end prematurely.”
“I won’t be able to train him on what it is to be a man.” I’d like to be the one who teaches him about life.”
In February 2009, Baumgartner gave birth to their second son, Hayes. In June 2010, they had their third child, a daughter called Grace. The COVID-19 epidemic, according to Costner, strengthened their bond.

In a June 2020 interview with People, the “Bodyguard” actor discussed what it was like to take a break from acting when everything was shut down due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
“Our partnership has really come into focus in terms of what we do for one another and how we cope with our family,” Baumgartner added.
“Our house is like a river; you just have to get into it.” And whatever you expected it to be, it may still be, but it will have to fit with what the day delivers.”
When Costner announced that he would be unable to attend the Golden Globe Awards in January, Baumgartner was there to support him.

At this year’s Golden Globes, Kevin Costner won best actor in a drama series for his performance as John Dutton in “Yellowstone,” but he was unable to attend the ceremony due to severe flooding at his home in Santa Barbara, California.
“Nobody is more disappointed than we are that we will not be able to attend the Golden Globes,” Costner stated in an Instagram video uploaded before the awards program began. “Chris wore a lovely gown, and I was looking forward to walking down the red carpet with her.”
He also emphasized “how badly Chris wanted to support me” and stated that his wife had prepared a last-minute watching party for the family at home.
“She went out and bought me some gold, yellow, black, and silver balloons, so we can sit in front of the television and see what happens,” Costner explained.
After 18 years of marriage, Baumgartner filed for divorce from Costner in May 2023.

On Tuesday, a spokeswoman for Costner, 68, confirmed the news to the Los Angeles Times, which comes only five months before the couple’s 19th wedding anniversary.
“It is with great regret that circumstances beyond Mr. Costner’s control have resulted in Mr. Costner having to join in a dissolution of marriage proceeding,” the actor stated in a statement.
“We respectfully request that his, Christine’s, and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time,” the representative stated.
Costner has recruited famous divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who recently represented Kim Kardashian in her divorce from Ye and has assisted many other A-listers in reaching divorce settlements over the years, according to TMZ.
Baumgartner has requested shared custody of their three children, who are now 15, 14, and 12. Costner replied to the petition, demanding shared custody of the children as well.
The announcement coincides with considerable upheaval in Costner’s professional life.
The future of his successful Paramount Network drama “Yellowstone” has been called into question since February, amid claims of a behind-the-scenes spat between the actor and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. He has yet to respond to the allegations.
