Kevin Smith is bereaved by the loss of his dog, Shecky. For almost two decades, Shecky was a valued friend and regular co-star in Smith’s films, podcasts, and programs.
He revealed the news on Instagram, beginning with the phrase “an obituary I hoped to never have to write.”
“The spectacular Shecky, my beloved best friend and trusty canine partner went away softly in her sleep last week,” he said. “It’s the most heartbreaking loss I’ve had since my father’s passing 20 years ago last June,” she says, “since Shecky was a fantastic staple on the landscape of my life for over two decades.” Her fiery energy pervaded my life and career for more than a third of my 52 years.”
The elderly Dachshund died calmly in her sleep.
Smith showed images of Shecky and spoke about her frequent cameos and appearances in his work projects in his emotional tribute.

“Anyone who has listened to my podcasts since 2007 is familiar with the Sheckster’s voice, since she was the undeniable unofficial third party in SModcast, Plus One, Fat Man on Batman, Edumacation, or any program I ever taped at home.” Shecky made appearances in Tusk, @YogaHosers, @jayandsilentbob Reboot, Son-in-Lockdown, and other films.”
He also mentioned that she had a song made about her. “The amazing @stephengris even memorialized her in Reboot’s ending credit song, ‘Shecky Don’t Like It,” he said.

Despite her prominence in his films and podcasts, Smith stated that Shecky had a greater personal influence on him.
“However, Shecky was most significant in my personal life.” Shecky joined me on numerous outings and hikes as the Robin to my Batman (or vice versa in her thinking). Even at her elderly age, she exhibited no symptoms of slowing down or illness; she just went to bed Tuesday night and did not wake up Wednesday morning.”
He said he was not present when she died because he cared for his mother, who had been hospitalized the previous month. He was upset when his family told him.
“When I found out about the loss, I was inconsolable and crushed—until I realized Sheck had taught me an essential last life lesson with her departure: No Day is Promised.” So, kids, never take anyone you care about (or even like) for granted: they might not be there when you get home.”
He went on to say that Shecky’s affection was that of a family member.
“With the exception of my mother, wife, and child, no one will ever love me more than this small giant.” And believe me, the emotion was reciprocal. There will always be a small, dachshund-sized hole in my heart that will never be filled for the rest of my life. Losing my closest friend and tiny baby dog has devastated me, but I consider myself fortunate to have known her at all.”
He subsequently posted a sweet video of Shecky on Instagram with the caption, “I didn’t own her.” She was in charge of me. My tiny baby dog, I miss you. “I’ll love you forever, The Man.”
