A selfish brother inherits a property and mocks his younger sister, who receives just five rusted old clocks from their late grandma. They had little idea what was lurking in those clocks.
“Oh, Grandma called you as well?! I assumed you’d be busy in the library, like a delightful little bookworm!” Brian, 26, sneered at his younger sister Linda, 19. She had just stepped out of the cab. Fear seized her eyes as her heart said, “Nothing will happen to Grandma. She will be alright. “She’ll live for another hundred years.” Brian and Linda had come to see their 90-year-old grandmother Marlene. She had begged that they see her right away. “Sweethearts, I want to see you one final time. I might not get another opportunity,” Marlene had regretfully warned them on the phone two days earlier…

Linda coughed as she approached her grandmother’s bedroom, noting how dusty it was. Marlene was too elderly and unwell to accomplish anything on her own. Linda saw that she hadn’t cleaned the floor, and the ceiling was moldy owing to leaks. Linda unlocked the clock, and what she saw inside changed her life.
“Grandma!!” she yelled as she dashed over to Marlene, who was sleeping. “Nothing will happen to you, grandmother. Please do not worry. God will not take you from us since you are all we have.
Linda and Marlene lived together until a year ago. She looked after her well and was quite helpful. She was even willing to reject a life-changing scholarship, but Marlene insisted she relocate to the city to complete her degree.
Brian entered the room, coughing and smiling. “Damn…I am allergic to dust!” “Grandma, did you not sweep and dust your room?” He got closer and noticed his grandmother was ill and emaciated. But he wasn’t worried and stood there, waiting to find out why she had called them.

Marlene looked into Brian’s eyes as she clutched Linda’s trembling hands. The girl was distressed to see her grandmother so pale and her eyes losing that once wonderful light. They appeared lifeless. Marlene smiled as she carefully rose and pulled two envelopes from under her pillow. “Sweethearts, this is for you,” she explained. “Please consider using it wisely.” “I called to deliver it to you.”
Brian and Linda opened the envelopes and discovered a $5,000 wad inside each. Linda couldn’t hold back her tears and hurried out weeping. Meanwhile, Brian scowled. “Only this amount? I assumed you had more to spare. Fine, I have to leave now.” He went away from Marlene without thanking her.
The next day, Marlene received a surprise.

“Good morning, Grandma!” Marlene overheard Linda in her bedroom. She did not expect her to return.
She awoke as the girl pulled back the curtains, shafts of light illuminating the dark, dusty chamber. She was startled to see Linda. She assumed the girl had moved to the city, where she studied and worked part-time as a librarian. Linda approached Marlene with the envelope she had given her the previous day.
“I contributed the $4,000 I had saved over the last year. Grandma, do you recall telling me about your terrible vision? I currently have $9,000.”. We can now pay for your eye surgery.”
Marlene rose from her bed. She hugged Linda, her face streaked with tears. I knew you better, sweetie! However, the procedure is already too late. I can sense my doom approaching. I don’t want to squander this money when it could be more beneficial. Linda brushed away Marlene’s tears and promised to live with her.
“I have taken a month off.” I’m not leaving until I see that golden smile on your face, grandmother.”
Linda understood just what she needed to do to restore Marlene’s grin.

Marlene benefited much from Linda’s presence. She didn’t need to worry about cooking for herself. Marlene used to eat stale bread for dinner on days when she didn’t feel like cooking. But once Linda arrived, she felt her feet again. Marlene had never felt more peaceful and pleased. She went outdoors one day to investigate after hearing weird sounds outside her bedroom. She was astonished. Linda had spent $9,000 on remodeling the house and repairing the leak.
“I knew you’d wanted to restore Grandpa’s prized home for a long time. Are you pleased now, Grandmother?! I refurbished it so you may see the magnificent house you used to live in with Grandpa.” Do you like it?”
Marlene was dumbfounded. She hurried to Linda as quickly as her frail legs could carry her and hugged her. Marlene had never sobbed as much as she did on Linda’s shoulders that day. Marlene regularly made wishes. “I want to die when I’m the happiest on earth!” A week later, her wish came true. Marlene died while sleeping, leaving Linda with more than a broken heart.
Linda and Brian were summoned to the lawyer’s office a few days after the burial to discuss the late Marlene’s will, which they had no idea existed. Upon their arrival, they learned about another unexpected inheritance.

“Mr. White, according to your grandmother’s will, you will inherit her residence. Here are the documents.” Please sign them.” Linda was astonished. Although she didn’t feel jealous of her older brother, she was troubled by the fact that she had renovated the house and Brian had unexpectedly acquired it.
“And, Miss Linda, this is yours,” the lawyer continued, putting a package toward her.
“What is this?” she shouted, opening the package. She discovered five ancient, vintage clocks within. Brian came out laughing and started ridiculing her.
“That’s really ridiculous and inexpensive!”! Grandmother bequeathed her house to me. She understood who deserved the best. You may adorn your rental abode with these rusted clocks and cry about it, sis. Luck does not favor everyone.” Linda, distraught, headed for the city, carrying the clocks with her. She never cared to properly inspect them until one day, when she discovered an etching on one of them.
“OPEN IT!” was engraved in a lovely cursive font on the metal.
Linda opened the clock out of curiosity, and what she found within would impact her life forever.

“A note?” She shouted and retrieved a small scroll from inside the clock. She opened it and sat there, shocked.
“Don’t overlook these rusted, antique watches! They are my grandfather’s 100-year-old antique clocks. And they are made of rare, gorgeous metal! The message continued, “My dear, each piece is worth $40,000.”
Linda’s eyes filled with tears of excitement as she read on.
“Everyone gets exactly what they deserve, Linda! I’m delighted you only received the finest.”. With love, Granny Marlene.”

Linda fell into tears while holding the historic clocks near to her heart. They still worked, and she could hear them tick near her heartbeat. Her grandmother seems to have remained stationary. Linda opted not to share the story with her brother.
“He is deluded by greed and believes he received the finest from Grandma. Allow him to live with that notion. Granny knew who deserved the best, and I don’t have to prove it to him!” She pondered and kept the unique clocks stashed in her drawer.
