“Do not worry, honey. Everything will be OK. “Momma is here,” Alicia muttered as she held her baby Edduin in her arms. The boy had risen in the middle of the night and wouldn’t stop crying.
After some time, Alicia had to move all her papers and laptop from the couch to the front table, where she sat with Edduin and sang him a lullaby. For the first ten minutes, it didn’t seem to work, but eventually it did, causing Alicia to exhale in relief.
She carefully put Edduin in his crib, kissed his forehead, and quietly closed the door so as not to wake him before returning to work.
“How will I manage situations like this?” I wish you were here, John. “I miss you,” the woman thought as she went to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee.
When physicians told Alicia Silvers and her husband John that they would be unable to have children, they chose to tour the world. They enjoyed performances at the Sydney Opera House, unwind on Honolulu beaches, indulged in tables and buffets in Las Vegas, and marveled at the breathtaking fjords in Bergen.
They were about to plan a trip to the Bahamas when Alicia realized she was pregnant. She and John were ecstatic and returned to their hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, to share the milestone with close friends and neighbors.
Foster care raised Alicia and John as orphans. Alicia was a stay-at-home wife, and John worked as the managing director of a company that manufactured parts for household electronics.
They had everything they could want in a blissful marriage. They had a beautiful home in a wonderful neighborhood; they liked each other’s company, and now they had the pleasure of becoming parents. Unfortunately, Alicia’s bliss was short-lived, as her life fell apart one tragic evening.
“Hello? Am I speaking to Alicia Silvers?
“Yes? “How can I help?”
“I am Officer Duncan, ma’am. I’m sorry to inform you that your spouse died in a tragic vehicle accident on Farm Road Highway. We obtained your contact information from his phone. We’d appreciate your swift confirmation of the corpse.”
Alicia couldn’t believe what she heard! That morning, John left, informing her he was leaving town for a business meeting. She didn’t want him to leave, telling him that she didn’t feel wonderful about it. But he had convinced her that she was exaggerating and that everything would be alright.
Alicia was 7 months into her pregnancy at the time. When John insisted on departing for his meeting, she surrendered and kissed him farewell. He had vowed to return shortly, but when she learned the horrible news, she couldn’t take it and went into labor.
Fortunately, she instantly called her next-door neighbor, Mrs. Hall, who went to her home and contacted 911. Hurried to the hospital, Alicia gave birth to a baby boy. However, due to his preterm delivery, he spent some time in the NICU.
After her release from the hospital with the infant, Alicia took over John’s business and began working to support her child. Because she possessed an MBA, she was able to quickly grasp the company’s dynamics. Edduin was quite little and required his mother’s attention all the time, which caused problems.
Madison, John’s secretary, was really helpful and understanding of her position, so she proposed that Alicia work from home and helped her set up her workplace so she could care for her kid.
Yes, Alicia could have hired a babysitter to care for the kid, but she chose not to. She wanted to care for her kid on her own, so she began working from home. In this way, Alicia managed to care for her son while still working.
This went on for over a year. Alicia was unaware that she would soon face another challenge.
The present day…
Alicia prepared a cup of coffee and went to the living room, where she organized all of her files and decided to take a final glance over the day’s reports. It was around 1 a.m. It took her half an hour to do the task, and she retreated to the couch due to exhaustion.
She awakened at 8 a.m., startled by Edduin’s sobbing. She sprang up and raced over to him, only to find him with tears flowing down his face like a torrent.
“What has happened, honey? Are you hungry?” she said as she began rocking him. This was the second time in a week that Alicia had seen Edduin’s restlessness and uncontrollable weeping while sleeping.
She glanced inside his crib to see if anything was poking him, but she found nothing. Finally, she thought that he might be alright after a bit and waited to see whether the weeping stopped.
Fortunately, Edduin’s sudden sobbing subsided after about a week, much to her relief, although he seemed to be exhausted every day. He kept yawning and rubbing his face whenever she carried him in her arms or attempted to play with him, and the toys he used to love appeared dull to him.
Concerned, she sought advice from a doctor, but it seemed to have no effect.
“I’m concerned because he appears peaceful most of the time, doctor, but he also appears fatigued in the mornings. “Why is that so?” worriedly asked Alicia.
“Do not worry, Mrs. Silvers. The doctor informed her that babies tend to go through phases. “Perhaps Edduin is going through the same.”
“How long will it take for him to be fine? I’m quite worried about him.”
“Don’t worry so much, Mrs. Silvers. There is no such timeline, but everything will be OK. It differs from one infant to the next.
Alicia assumed Edduin was going through one of those phases and hoped he would recover soon. Nothing changed after a week, and Edduin got tireder every day.
One day, Alicia decided to check on him after putting him to bed and discovered a peculiar noise emanating from his room. Edduin looked to be chuckling, and someone was in his room. She assumed it was just her hunch when she smashed open the door and found no one inside.
Edduin stared at her from his cot, and the room was unusually silent. Her bathroom, pantry, and under-bed searches yielded nothing.
Alicia returned to the living room believing it was work-related stress, but the behavior persisted the next day and the next. Every day, Edduin would awaken from his deep sleep, chuckling or simply looking about the room.
Believing there was a problem, Alicia installed a Wi-Fi baby monitor in the house to monitor Edduin, then sat in the living room to watch the live broadcast.
She locked her eyes on the television, studying it closely, and everything seemed excellent for the first few minutes. However, after approximately ten minutes, she observed a slight movement in the room, and Edduin’s mouth tipped in a smile.
Fearing that someone had broken into Edduin’s room, Alicia hurried in and pushed the door open. Her hands trembled, and she shuddered with fear when she realized her baby wasn’t alone in the room.
Alicia exhaled with relief upon realizing the visitor was merely a charming little puppy encircling Edduin’s cot. He seemed unclean and frail, and he spoke in a low, difficult-to-hear tone.
When Alicia unlocked Edduin’s door, the small puppy hid beneath the crib. Edduin began to chuckle, and Alica realized what had happened.
It turns out that Alicia and John had a pet dog named Doblo, and they had neglected to lock the dog door in the rear of the room when he died. After Doblo’s death, they transformed that room into Edduin’s nursery.
Since so much had happened between John’s departure from his heavenly dwelling and Edduin’s birth, Alicia completely forgot to lock the dog door. This is how the small puppy entered the room, continuously playing with Edduin and refusing to sleep.
Alicia felt awful for the unfortunate animal after seeing it in that condition and decided to adopt it. Casper, as she dubbed him, has become Edduin’s best buddy. Thanks to tiny Casper, Edduin now cries less, sleeps better since Alicia ensures they don’t spend all of their time together, and is a much happier baby.
Becoming a parent is not an effortless undertaking. Alicia’s ability to manage her career while also caring for her infant exemplifies how parents go above and beyond for their children.
Learn to be kinder to animals. Alicia acquired the dog after noticing he was in awful shape.
