My fiancée wore a black gown to our wedding, and when I found out the reason, my life changed completely…

Although I intended for my wedding day to be one of the most memorable days of my life, what transpired left a sad mark on my mind. I never expected things to end out this way.

I met Jane through a mutual acquaintance, and after a few dates, we were inseparable. She was the outgoing extrovert who was constantly surrounded by friends, whereas I was the quiet, introverted kind who shunned crowds.

However, with her, things were different.

I always wanted to be around her because she made me feel loved in ways I didn’t know were possible. She enjoyed my company and never made me believe I was unworthy of her affection.

A few months into our relationship, I proposed. I was certain Jane was the one, and she agreed without hesitation, smiling at the ring I had chosen.

“I can’t believe you said yes,” I told her one time. “I don’t know how I got so lucky, Jane.”

Honestly, I didn’t think I deserved someone as wonderful as her.

Our friendship became stronger as the days went into weeks, and we eventually decided to marry.

Our families met, and everything went well. We planned a little ceremony during the summer, where we would exchange vows in front of our closest relatives and friends.

On our wedding day, I stood at the altar in a fitted black suit, excitedly awaiting Jane’s trip down the aisle. I anticipated seeing her in the stunning white gown we had picked together only weeks before.

However, she didn’t.

Instead, she donned a long black dress, complete with a matching veil. She donned an outfit reminiscent of a funeral.

Why did she do this? I thought. What exactly was wrong with her?

Her eyes were filled with hatred as she approached me. Meanwhile, the visitors gazed at her with wide eyes.

When she reached the altar, I gently grasped her hands and whispered, “Why are you wearing black? What’s going on?”

“I’ll tell you after the ceremony,” she added, gazing directly into my eyes. Her face remained blank, staring at me as if I had committed the greatest transgression ever.

“Wait!” I declared by raising my hand.

The congregation fell completely quiet.

Tell me. Tell me why you are wearing black. “Now,” I pleaded, oblivious to the fact that her subsequent words would destroy my existence.

“It’s all because of your mother,” Jane explained. “She told me everything.”

“What do you mean?” I inquired.

That’s when I noticed Jane’s eyes well up with tears.

“She told me about you and Lauren,” Jane said, her voice trembling. “Your best friend.”

“What? What did my mother say about Lauren? I asked, narrowing my eyes. I had no idea what Jane was talking about.

Jane declared, “She said you’ve been cheating on me with Lauren,” eliciting a collective gasp from the attendees. “She said you two were having an affair and that you intended to leave me for her. That’s why I’m wearing black. Nathan, I regret the love we once shared.

I could not believe what Jane had just said.

“This is not true, Jane,” I argued. “I swear I’ve never cheated on you.” Lauren and I are only friends. I don’t understand why my mom would make such a comment.

I scanned the crowd in an attempt to find my mother, but she was nowhere in sight. I wanted to confront her and show she was lying.

“I don’t believe you,” Jane said firmly. “I know you’re lying because that’s what you’ve always done.”

“Jane, please,” I implored, grabbing for her hand, but she backed away. “Mom didn’t like you. She is attempting to undermine us. Please, you must believe me.”

“Oh, I understand. “But it’s not just about the affair, Nathan,” Jane said, shaking her head. I know your secret. I know you have been lying to me.”

“What’s the secret?” I inquired.

Jane glanced around the cathedral before locking eyes with me.

“You lied about your family’s finances,” she said. “You’ve concealed your family’s bankruptcy, and now you’re marrying me with the intention of using my money to revive your business.” Isn’t that right?

Oh no, I thought.

What Jane stated was largely accurate, but I never meant to share my secret in this manner. Yes, my family’s business was struggling, and we were on the verge of bankruptcy. Yes, I believed that marrying Jane might help, but I wasn’t doing it for the money!

I loved her, and that was the major reason I wanted to marry her. I didn’t know how to convey this to her.

“Listen, Jane,” I instructed. “Let me explain, I—”

“Explain what?” She shut me off. Did your mother encourage you to find a wealthy woman to revive the family business? She told me everything. I am incredulous that I was so naive as to develop feelings for a man of your caliber.

At that moment, I felt a strong desire to express myself. I tried to explain that I was not lying, but I couldn’t say anything. I could not say anything.

“It’s over, Nathan,” Jane said before storming out of the chapel.

As she moved away, the guests muttered together. Meanwhile, my friends hurried over to her, but I couldn’t let her go so easily. I needed to make her understand.

“Jane, wait!” I yelled, dashing after her. “Please, just listen to me.”

“I don’t want to listen to your lies, Nathan,” she stated without turning back.

I walked and stopped in front of her, obstructing her route.

“I swear I’m not lying to you,” I insisted. “I’m not sure why Mom said all this to you, but I suspect it’s because she dislikes you. I never told you this, but Mom wasn’t particularly pleased with our relationship.

“And why should I believe you, Nathan?”

Before I could respond, Lauren walked out of the chapel.

“Jane, please listen,” she urged. “I’m not sure what your mother-in-law told you, but there is nothing going on between us. Nathan is only a buddy, yet he cares deeply about you. “Trust me.”

Jane stared at Lauren, then me. She was unsure if she could trust us.

“Look, if I wanted to marry you for your money, I would’ve never signed the prenup,” I remarked, grasping Jane’s hands. “I signed it because I wanted to safeguard your money and future. I wouldn’t have done it if I’d wanted your money.”

“But why did you hide your family’s financial situation?” inquired the lady. “What if you are concealing more information? Why should I put my trust in you?”

I gently shook my head and took a long breath.

“You’re correct, Jane. I should have told you about my family’s plight, but I was afraid you would abandon me. I hesitated, thinking I had to tell her the rest. “There’s something else I’ve never told you.”

Jane folded her arms and waited for me to continue.

“My mom hates me,” I said. “She usually does. I did a DNA test in college some years ago. I learned that my father was not my biological father. When I confronted her, everything fell apart. Dad abandoned us, taking all the money with him.”

“That’s why she lied to you,” I said. “She intended to wreck my wedding because she couldn’t bear to see me happy. I suppose she merely pretended to accept you and waited for the ideal opportunity to stop my relationship. I apologize for withholding all of this from you.” I felt humiliated.

At that moment, I noticed that Jane was no longer upset. She had this sympathetic expression on her face, as if she felt horrible for me.

“Why didn’t you tell me? You were embarrassed?” She asked. “We were supposed to start a new life together, Nathan.” But you were hiding a lot from me. “Do you think I can trust you after all of this?”

I hate to say it, but I knew Jane was correct. I should have told her everything from the start.

“I’m sorry, Jane,” I said to her, looking down. “I know I’ve made mistakes, but I love you.”

“I’m sorry too, Nathan,” she said, wiping tears from her cheek. “I suppose this is how it ends. This is how we parted ways. I cannot live with someone who conceals secrets.”

And with that, the love of my life, the lady I treasured the most, left me.

Tears flowed down my cheeks as I saw her leave the chapel in her automobile. I couldn’t stop her, knowing she was right.

My life has not been the same since that day. While I faced my mother and severed all relations with her, I repeatedly attempted to contact Jane, but she never returned my calls.

I lost the love of my life due to lies, treachery, and secrets I should not have maintained.
