People are just now discovering that Meryl Streep was once in love with a late Hollywood actor

Some people are just finding out about Meryl Streep’s first love.

The star of “Only Murders in the Building” married Don Gummer in 1978, and though they’ve quietly separated, there’s been no divorce filing.

In October 2023, it was revealed that Gummer and Streep had been estranged for over six years. A spokesperson for Streep said they’ve chosen separate lives but still care for each other.

They have four children together: Louisa, Mamie, Grace, and Henry Wolfe Gummer.

Before marrying Gummer, Streep dated John Cazale, known for his roles in “The Deer Hunter,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” and “The Godfather” series.

They met in 1976 and quickly fell in love, despite their 14-year age gap. Sadly, Cazale was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 1977.

Streep paused her acting career to care for him. Cazale passed away in March 1978, with Streep by his side.

Streep rarely talks about Cazale, but she once described him as unique and compassionate.

Years later, some are still learning about their relationship, expressing surprise and sadness at the news.

Cazale is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Massachusetts.
