Phil Collins became a superstar after rising to prominence as Genesis’ drummer and singer. During the 1980s, he became one of the world’s most popular performers, with hits including In the Air Tonight and You Can’t Hurry Love.
Collins is now 71 years old, and it appears that the great singer has succumbed to age. Phil Collins provided an unsettling health report to the BBC, claiming that he can barely grasp a drumstick.

As a kid, Phil Collins had an interest in music, particularly the drums. He was born on January 30, 1951, in London, England. His father was an insurance agent, while his mother was a talent manager and agent for young performers.
Phil grew up in a family rich with innovative ideas. His older brother, Clive, became a cartoonist, while his sister competed competitively as an ice skater.
However, Phil didn’t much appreciate cartoons or ice skating. When he was three years old, he was given a drum, and when he was five, his uncle built him a drum kit that fit in a bag. Collins remembered that his uncle constructed the drum kit from tambourines, triangles, cymbals, and toy drums.
“The cliché is, ‘Well, at least it will keep him quiet,'” he told Interview Magazine.
Collins rapidly developed an interest in the drums, playing more and more and even performing in concerts at his parents’ boating club. At the same time, he was an excellent actor who clearly enjoyed his time on stage.

“When I started playing seriously, the English beat scene was in full swing, with bands like the Shadows.” It was the very early 1960s,” Collins remembered. “I remember buying Please Please Me.” I used to put my drums in front of the mirror and turn on the record player so I wouldn’t see what I was doing.
“Then, when I was 14, I went to an instructor to learn how to read drum music. I imagined that after this rock-and-roll phase ended, I would need to find a job playing in a dance band or in an orchestra pit. So I learned to read drum music, but I discovered that my reading ability was nowhere near as excellent as playing instinctively.
Phil was given the role of Oliver in a London performance when he was 13 years old! At that moment, he and his parents decided to leave his current school and attend the Barbara Speake Stage School in London. Collins was an extra in The Beatles’ 1964 film A Hard Day’s Night. He possessed ability that may have led to a career in acting, but he was more interested in music.
Phil Collins and four other Chiswick County School for Boys pupils formed their first band, Real Thing. Later, he joined the band Freehold, where he composed his debut song, “Lying Crying Dying.”
However, Phil Collins’ life would never be the same again after 1970. He spotted an advertisement in the paper about a band named Genesis searching for a drummer who could also act as a backing singer. Lead vocalist Peter Gabriel had formed the band three years prior, eager for a change in their sound.
Collins received the position, and everything changed immediately. In the five years since, Genesis has released five studio albums and toured the United States. In 1975, Peter Gabriel chose to quit the band, and they suddenly required a new lead vocalist.
The band was believed to have interviewed more than 400 singers. Nonetheless, Phil Collins became the band’s primary vocalist and drummer. But was that what he actually wanted? I felt vulnerable. Phil Collins told LouderSound, “I’d lived my entire life behind the security blanket of a drum kit, and now there was nothing but a microphone stand.”
“The band sounds different from the front. Out front, you hear a different type of balance, which is uncomfortable. And, frankly, I didn’t want the job.
“I wanted to stay as a drummer. Every Monday, we had five or six individuals come down to audition, and I would teach them what they needed to accomplish. We were working on A Trick Of The Tail, and I would teach them ancient tunes like Firth Of Fifth or something, and I ended up sounding better than everyone else,” he said.
“And this [Genesis] was like a family.” Do we want this individual in our family? Will he fit into the way we do things? Anyway, we couldn’t locate anyone and ended up with me.

Despite Collins’ conflicted feelings about being the frontman, Genesis resumed their work. With him at the helm, the group continued their path to even greater fame.
Genesis began as a prog rock band, but Collins and the other members later gravitated toward pop rock. They had their first giant success in 1978 with Follow You Follow Me, which peaked at No. 7 in the UK and No. 23 in the US. In the 1980s, more hit songs were released. Duke, released in 1980, was one of the band’s most commercially successful albums, reaching number one in the United Kingdom.
However, although Genesis was doing well, Phil Collins began to pursue other ventures. He launched his solo career by releasing his debut album in 1981. He produced and composed his material, releasing singles as a solo artist such as the big hit In The Air Tonight from his first album and You Can’t Hurry Love and I Don’t Care Anymore from his second solo album in 1982.
Could you please explain why Genesis did not receive those songs?
“Well, Genesis got to the stage where we’d all compose together, and then someone would go off and create the lyrics and melody that would accompany what we’d done. There was also the occasional absence of air”. It was extremely claustrophobic,” Phil Collins remarked.
“I’ve always wanted the spaciousness of an R&B album, you know? So, when I started learning how to record at home, I told myself that whatever drawings I was creating, I’d sing. Everything else I did would have to work around the vocals.
I had the privilege of collaborating with Frida from ABBA. “So, something like “In The Air Tonight” is a good example where you have an atmosphere and a vocal, and if I gave that to Genesis, it would have gotten a lot busier.. Any of the songs I’ve done have been hectic in terms of production.
“Certainly, some songs are a little bit busier than others — I mean, Sussudio has all those horn parts.”
Phil Collins’ 1985 dance hit Sussudio peaked at number one on the Billboard singles chart. Two years later, he wrote the title song for the film’s soundtrack, Against All Odds. It peaked at number one on the singles list and received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
At that period, Phil was still a Genesis member. In 1991, the band released the classic “I Can’t Dance.”
Phil also worked as a producer, collaborating with performers such as Anni-Frid Lyngstad of ABBA.
In 1996, he chose to quit Genesis to pursue other ventures. “Having been with Genesis for 25 years, I felt it was time to change direction in my musical life,” according to Collins.
“For now, I plan to focus on film music, jazz projects, and, of course, my solo career. I wish the Genesis folks all the best in the future. We continue to be the closest of friends.
Phil has gone through a lot, both with new solo ventures and production. He’s been married three times and rose to prominence by penning songs about his relationships. That includes his debut hit, In the Air Tonight. The song was about his anguish following the divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, who left him for another man.
“People ask me, “Are you not embarrassed” You are exposing your private life to the entire world. Collins added, “It’s as if I shouldn’t let people see how hurt I am, how I cry, and how I act unmanly.” “But I’m not embarrassed by it.”
Phil Collins is no longer merely a musician and producer with “a couple of hits”; he already holds six Grammy Awards. Furthermore, Collins is one of only three artists (together with Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney) to have sold over 100 million records.

Nicholas Collins will play the drums, as his father can no longer do so. Speaking on BBC Breakfast, the iconic musician said that he will not be playing drums due to health issues.
“I can barely hold a stick.” “I’d love to, but you know, I can hardly hold a stick in this hand. He added that there are certain physical limitations, and this may be his final trip.
“We’re all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed,” Mr. Collins remarked. “I think, yeah, I think just generally for me, I don’t know if I want to go out on the road anymore.”
