The ocean covers 70% of the Earth, yet people have only explored roughly 5% of it. Our understanding of the ocean remains restricted, and we still have a lot to learn.
Recently, a weird aquatic creature washed up on a California beach, raising some intriguing concerns. Continue reading to learn everything that happened. Humans have yet to discover several species in the deep ocean. Our limited understanding of the ocean and the marine species that live inside it is due to the ocean’s vastness and depth, which make it practically difficult for humans to study the waters completely. A deep-water monster came ashore in California this week, highlighting how little we actually understand the ocean.
On October 13, a bizarre critter washed up at Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach. In a Facebook post, the California park identified the fish as a Pacific footballfish. The fish normally lives in the murky depths of the ocean and is seldom seen by humans due to the harsh environment in which it lives.

The statement expressed amazement at its discovery: “Guess who washed ashore right in time for Friday the 13th? It’s angler fish number two at Crystal Cove State Park!” The statement continued, “A park visitor discovered the same type of anglerfish, Pacific Football Fish, onshore in May 2021, causing quite a stir.” Two years later, last Friday, October 13th, the same kind of fish washed up. “What does it all mean?” they inquired in a frightening tone, sparking reflection on how this incident could have happened.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has removed the eerie-looking critter “for further research,” according to the announcement.
According to the statement, more than 200 species of anglerfish may be found in the world’s waters. According to the article, “Only females possess a long stalk on the head with bioluminescent tips used as a lure to entice prey in pitch-black water as deep as 3,000 feet!”

According to the statement, anglerfish possess teeth resembling “pointed shards of glass” and a large mouth that allows them to swallow prey the size of their own body.
The way they reproduce is interesting. Males of the species grow to just an inch, however females can reach up to 24 inches. The statement described how they reproduced, claiming that the male “latches onto the female with their teeth and sexual parasite,’ eventually coalescing with the female until nothing is left of their form but their testes for reproduction.”
Spotting such a fish on the beach when it is entirely intact is “very rare,” according to the park. The park also stated that “it is unknown how or why these fish ended up onshore.”

“Seeing this strange and fascinating fish is a testament to the curious diversity of marine life lurking below the water’s surface in California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), and as scientists continue to learn more about these deep-sea creatures, it’s important to reflect on how much is still to be learned from our wonderful and mysterious ocean!” Crystal Cove closed their post.
It’s remarkable how a creature from the deep water makes its way to the beach. It raises many issues regarding what caused its migration to shallower waters. All of this is now a mystery! According to the park, a similar event occurred two years ago, and the fish discovered in May 2021 is now housed in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.
