Pittsburgh airport employees valiantly rescue a diamond that dropped from a woman’s ring at baggage claim

An engagement ring does not mark the beginning of a journey with a partner; rather, it represents a pledge to continue the adventure you’ve already begun. That is why engagement rings retain such personal meaning for the person who gets them. In most cases, people adore the ring forever, which is why April Schmitt panicked when she learned she had misplaced the diamond from her engagement ring.

She knew the stone had been misplaced somewhere around or in the baggage claim area of Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Schmitt has been married to her spouse for almost 30 years and knows her engagement ring like the back of her hand (literally). The diamond was sitting in its pronged setting when she arrived at the airport and made her way to the baggage claim area, but she discovered it had vanished shortly after her husband picked her up.

She worried when she saw that her ring’s stone was missing. She added in a statement, “I panicked, and my heart plummeted. I honestly didn’t believe I’d ever see it again.

The couple, who live in Sewickley just a 30-minute drive away, quickly returned to the airport to recover the lost diamond. Some diamonds may appear large when set in a ring, but unless they emit a strobe light, they are nearly impossible to notice in a busy, open space. Schmitt was aware that the chances of finding the diamond were slim, yet she was determined to make every effort to locate it.

Upon the couple’s return to the airport, Schmitt informed the officials about her stolen diamond and received a warm reception. In this case, it would have been simple to give up seeking a clean stone in such a large expanse, but that is not what happened. Instead, the employee she notified contacted airport maintenance. Suddenly, they had a full crew searching for the gem.

The maintenance staff arrived with flashlights and searched thoroughly, looking all over, beneath, and between the baggage carousel for the diamond. The Schmitts searched for so long that they gave up and returned home, certain they had lost the treasured stone forever. However, the team they left behind was determined. Tom Riordan, a stationary engineer, informed the frustrated woman that the following shift would continue to search for the diamond between flights until it was found, which they did.

Sean Dempsey, a fellow stationary engineer, ultimately found the missing stone. He told ABC News that he was crawling with a torch and used paint sticks to scrape away the filth. “The diamond caught a little bit of light, and I found it.”

Schmitt was overjoyed to hear that her missing diamond had been discovered. “There were several ways this tale could have ended, but these people were determined to rescue me. I travel much and visit several airports. To have this experience here and to be regarded as an important person—those staff members were so concerned with my pleasure and doing the right thing for me. I wasn’t simply some random traveler. They went out of their way to care for me.

The personnel at Pittsburgh International Airport were pleased to be of service. Elise Gomez, manager of customer experience at PIT, says to Blue Sky News, “We’ve really invested in our passenger experience and are doing everything we can to ensure seamless travel.” We understand how stressful flying can be, which is why we provide a range of services, like our PIT Paws teams and facilities such as Presley’s Place for travelers with sensory sensitivities. It’s all about the people. Our crew dedicates itself to assisting travelers, be it guiding them to the appropriate gate or tracking down a misplaced diamond.

This isn’t the first time the PIT team has helped find a lost diamond. Kristen Tunno lost her grandmother’s diamond ring at an airport in 2023. April Laukaitis, a customer service representative, discovered the family treasure trapped between the tiles of one of the bathroom floors.

Airports aren’t known for their friendliness, so it’s always good to hear when airport employees go above and beyond to show compassion to passengers.
