‘Scrubs’ Star Looks Thin and ‘Unrecognizable’: Inside Her Drastic Transformation

Throughout her life, the celebrity has struggled with body image and eating issues. She explained that the pressure to maintain a specific image, particularly in the entertainment industry, has exacerbated her anxiety.

The popular figure’s issues with self-esteem and eating habits date back to her early childhood. She has established a consistent routine to tackle these issues, often receiving praise for appearing younger than her actual age. Take a look at how the experienced actress’s image has evolved since her debut in Hollywood.

These bodily changes reflect a deeper personal journey. Long before she rose to prominence, the “Scrubs” actress and comic struggled with body image and eating difficulties.

She grew up playing hockey with sporty brothers who prioritized physical fitness. Recalling that time, she once said, “I think, as a young girl, that can really kind of [expletive] with your head.”

Those early experiences shaped how the New Hampshire native would eventually deal with the responsibilities of her vocation. She was well aware of the pressures of her business, which frequently prioritized looks above well-being.

In an interview, the star explained that working in a high-stress environment where women are required to wear tight gowns leaves little opportunity for nutritional missteps. If she eats something that doesn’t sit well, the discomfort may become so severe that finishing a 12-hour shoot seems impossible.

Coping with these issues has never been simple, especially for someone who admits to experiencing significant levels of anxiety. At the age of 23, the actress made significant lifestyle adjustments, including giving up sweets and alcohol in favor of yoga, breathing exercises, and stretching. She once described it as “the best Ritalin you could give anyone.”

These adjustments evolved into more than merely habits, becoming a means of maintaining equilibrium. She opened up: “I’m an actress with food issues and body image issues—that’s real.” Still, the star strives to rehabilitate and manage her physical health in a natural manner, striving to provide her body with what it requires most.

Her dedication to well-being is unwavering, even throughout long days on set. While filming the sci-fi comedy “Future Man” in 2017, the actress maintained her rigid schedule despite the challenges of stunt training.

The cast made jokes about overdeveloping their muscles after the tough training. After the first season, she stopped weightlifting and started going to the Tracy Anderson Method class three times a week.

The comedian characterized it as a sweat-inducing workout and the only one that had ever worked for her. Another favorite method she stays active is hiking, which she often does with machetes in hand. Even her mornings are well planned. By 4 a.m., she’s already on the mat, doing yoga that focuses on breath and mild stretching rather than vigorous movement.

She feels that setting aside time early in the day allows her to remain ahead of a hectic schedule. After that, she takes an ice-cold shower, switching between hot and cold water. According to her, this procedure improves hormone balance and the endocrine system, while temperature changes are beneficial to heart health.

The cold ritual does not finish in the shower. Her first drink is an ice combination composed of Shakeology’s Power Greens Boost, cacao (selected because she loves chocolate), maca, and matcha. She enjoys it “super cold, almost-hurt-your-teeth cold.” Managing what she puts into her body is an ongoing process.

Due to lifelong dietary allergies and sensitivities, the model has eliminated a variety of foods. After removing some foods, she learned she couldn’t stomach garlic or anything with seeds, such as avocados, chia seeds, quinoa, and coconut. Even nuts and beans must be properly selected.

Her stringent diet finally led her to a vegan lifestyle after being vegetarian from the age of nine while growing up in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Ironically, gluten is still one of the few foods her body tolerates.

Her ongoing dietary limits have piqued her curiosity in natural digestion remedies, which range from superfoods and powders to experimental herbs. She previously described her digestion as that of a child at 36 and stated a wish to improve it.

When the celebrity discovers a digestible dish, she tends to overindulge. Blueberries became a staple of her diet, often in three huge bowls each day, simply because they are compatible with her system.

She feels that they provide more than simply digestive benefits. According to her, fruit helps you feel good, and blueberries promote telomeres, which she refers to as the body’s aging barometer.

Telomeres begin to shorten at birth, according to the celebrity, but blueberries can help them lengthen. “I have had more people tell me that I look younger,” the 43-year-old claimed, blaming the difference on her fruit-heavy diet.

Although she reduced her intake of blueberries to avoid probable allergies, one food remains a personal favorite. Rice cakes, which she swears are not part of any fashionable diet, remain a staple.

She likes the crunch and finds it fulfilling, even if it never quite fills her up. Her favorite toppings are beans, Vegenaise, arugula, heirloom tomatoes, and nutritional yeast. She doesn’t mind when the combination comes apart while she’s eating.

Plain white rice, like rice cakes, is a popular choice. She adds nutritional yeast, pink Himalayan salt, and Vegenaise to make a creamy, risotto-like meal.

She occasionally indulges in vegan Mookies with peanut butter or oatmeal chai raisin, even though she is aware that they could cause discomfort. Despite her sensitivity to oats, chai, and raisins, she eats them anyhow, joking that she just wears loose sweatpants and lives with the consequences.

Eliza Coupe’s food and lifestyle habits aren’t the only ones that have evolved over time. In previous public appearances, she had a broader face, rounder cheeks, and smoother skin. Her physique appeared stronger, with wider shoulders and noticeable muscular tone.

More lately, the celebrity’s appearance has taken a more pronounced change. On March 19, 2025, she attended the international premiere of Netflix’s “The Residence,” her most recent public appearance. For the occasion, the veteran performer wore a plunging dress that displayed her tattoos.

Her form seems much slimmer, with more defined facial features, sunken cheekbones, and pronounced collarbones. Along with these modifications, her hairdo has altered. She currently sports a jagged shag cut with bangs and a disheveled texture, which complements her edgy, almost tough look.

In a recent shot, she wore the style with huge spectacles and a faux fur-lined jacket, a stark change from her previous, more polished appearance. The obvious shift in her physique has spurred internet debate, with some stating the public figure now seems “unrecognizable.”

“This is just sad,” one individual said. Another person said, “That is a dramatic difference.” One just said, “Oh wow [sic],” while another said, “So sad. This represents the appearance of an actress who had to sacrifice a significant portion of her soul to pursue her career.

In addition to her remarkable physical change and daring new style, Coupe’s personal life has received a lot of attention. Aside from her career in Hollywood, she has seen changes in her personal connections.

Her first marriage was to Randall Whittinghill, an acting instructor, whom she married on New Year’s Eve of 2007. During their relationship, the celebrity revealed that she started dating Whittinghill because he resembled Johnny Depp from “The Pirates of the Caribbean.”

She agreed that he was aware of it and pointed out that they had been together for 12 years, during which time he still resembled the actor.

Despite the comedy and affection expressed in such words, the relationship finally ended. The couple parted on their fifth anniversary, and Whittinghill filed for divorce in 2013, alleging irreconcilable differences. They did not have any children together.

Coupe married novelist Darin Olien shortly after her first marriage ended. The two married in December 2014, shortly after she divorced Whittinghill.

During brighter times, the pair seemed tight and pleased. Olien uploaded a snapshot of them smiling together while enjoying the holidays overseas. He captioned the photo, “My SuperBride @theelizacoupe and I enjoying the holidays New Zealand style!”

Nearly four years later, Olien filed for divorce, citing their separation date of March 27, 2018. The couple didn’t have any children, and it was uncertain if they would pursue spousal support in this case.

The “Happy Endings” alum’s prior divorce had serious financial consequences. She was ordered to pay $7,000 per month in spousal support for two years and a lump sum amount of $306,000.

Eliza Coupe’s life has evolved both personally and professionally, with apparent changes and public curiosity. From grueling routines to two high-profile marriages, she has experienced hardships both inside and outside of the spotlight. Her changing appearance and lifestyle choices continue to elicit significant responses. Despite all, she remains a source of wonder and discourse.
