Selena Gomez responded bluntly to those who believe that coming up about her bipolar condition and inability to bear a child makes her a ‘victim’.
The star of Only Murders in the Building recently spoke at a Women in Film event in California about the importance of vulnerability and how she has managed her authenticity in business.
“I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need or want help—that is not shameful,” Gomez stated in a video from the event that has since gone popular on Twitter.
“So, I said that I can’t bear a child.” I shared that I am bipolar…f**k off,” eliciting cheers from the audience.
“That’s how my life is. “That is who I am,” Gomez concluded. “And I only want to be an advocate for women, so that’s why I share; that’s why I like to be honest.”
“Everyone’s going through something. I haven’t got it all together. I’m not, you know, whatever.” I am myself, and that is all I can be,” she continued. “So disregard anyone who claims you’re a victim. You are a survivor in my book.”
The singer and actor recently told Vanity Fair that she is unable to bear her own children because it is physically unsafe for her to bring a pregnancy to term.
“I have never said this, but I am unable to carry my children,” she told the site. “I have some medical concerns that might jeopardize both my and the baby’s lives.” That was something I had to mourn for a while.”
“It’s not exactly as I envisioned it. “I assumed it would happen the same way it does for everyone,” Gomez added. “That’s greatly improved my situation. I consider it a godsend that amazing people are willing to undertake surrogacy or adoption, both of which are excellent options for me,” she said of her future hopes to create her own family.
The options for mothers made me grateful. “I’m one of those people,” Gomez said. “I’m curious to see what that trip will look like, but it will be a bit different.
“At the end of the day, I do not care. It will be mine. “It will be my baby.”
