Although many of us grew up watching Shia LaBeouf on television, his presence on-screen has significantly diminished in recent years.
The 38-year-old actor stepped back from the spotlight after allegations surfaced in 2020 when his former partner, FKA Twigs, filed a lawsuit accusing him of misconduct and harmful behavior during their relationship.
While LaBeouf made a rare red carpet appearance at the Cannes Film Festival in May, he has otherwise maintained a low profile. He has denied the accusations, and although a trial was initially scheduled for this year, a U.S. court has now postponed it to September of next year.
Following the allegations, the actor released a public statement addressing his past behavior. He told The New York Times:
“I have no excuses for my actions—only rationalizations. For years, I have caused harm to myself and those around me. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and deeply sorry to those I hurt.”

In 2021, LaBeouf announced he was taking a break from Hollywood and seeking treatment at an inpatient facility.
FKA Twigs shared her perspective on their relationship in an interview with Elle the same year. She described her experience:
“I love what I do, and [filming Honey Boy] was an incredible experience, but I ended up feeling taken advantage of. At what point does Hollywood prioritize people’s safety over profits?”
Despite addressing the accusations in public forums, LaBeouf has continued to deny the claims made in the case.
During a 2022 interview on the Real Ones with Jon Bernthal podcast, the actor reflected on his behavior, stating:
“I hurt that person. And in the process, I caused harm to many others before her. I was selfish, dishonest, and scared.”

He also credited the experience with prompting significant personal change:
“Had this not happened, I’d still be living a mediocre life—or worse.”
LaBeouf emphasized his commitment to finding purpose and mending relationships with those he wronged. He also spoke about his goal of being a positive role model for his daughter, Isabel, whom he shares with wife Mia Goth:
“I have until she’s old enough to read to build a relationship where she knows me for who I truly am, not for the image people see publicly.”
In an October 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, LaBeouf reflected on how he dealt with public criticism:
“If you focus solely on how the internet views you, it’s easy to forget about the love that exists in the world. It’s tempting to spiral into a negative mindset.”

The actor shared further insights:
“My mind naturally seeks faults, and I already lean toward negativity. So, when life takes a downward turn, it’s challenging to stay afloat.”
In January, fans were surprised to learn that LaBeouf had chosen to embrace spirituality, becoming a deacon after portraying a saint in the film Padre Pio.
Reports from U.S. friars who helped LaBeouf prepare for the role indicate that he has converted to Catholicism. His confirmation sponsor, Alexander Rodriguez, later revealed that LaBeouf intends to pursue the role of a deacon in the future.
Following his role in Padre Pio, LaBeouf joined the cast of Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi drama Megalopolis, which premiered in September. He also recently wrapped filming Salvable, a British boxing drama in which he stars alongside Toby Kebbell and Michael Socha.
