Sister makes it her mission to find out what her brother is hiding, but she regrets it when her curiosity gets the best of her…

Lila feels her brother Caleb is concealing something and can’t stop looking for answers. When his cryptic comments only pique her interest, she sets out to discover the truth, realizing that her search for secrets might ruin everything in their lives.

Sitting back in her chair, Lila drummed her fingers on the table as Caleb disappeared through the café doors. She couldn’t ignore the unease that his reaction had caused her.

Caleb was usually calm, even when things went wrong. But today, his clipped tone and tight shoulders as he walked away suggested a different narrative.

Amelia grinned while drinking her cold coffee. “That was dramatic. What has gotten into him?”

“I don’t know,” Lila said, frowning. “But I am going to find out. He is certainly concealing something.”

Amelia lifted an eyebrow, her interest aroused. “And how do you intend to achieve that?” He doesn’t always provide complete transparency.

Lila glanced at the door from which Caleb had just departed. “I am his sister.” If anyone can figure it out, it’s me!”

Amelia laughed. Good luck with it. Caleb is extremely stubborn when it comes to sharing.

Lila’s thoughts raced as she recalled their brief meeting. Caleb seems almost… terrified. His eyes darted about, avoiding hers, which was unlike him.

He usually responded to her questions directly, even if he thought she was being inquisitive. This time, his demeanor completely changed.

“Last night,” Lila began, her voice low, “I overheard him on the phone. He sounded anxious. Almost as if he was battling with someone, but he didn’t want anyone to hear.”

Amelia leaned in. “What did he say?”

Lila shakes her head.

“I could not make out much. I could only make out bits and pieces. But he cut the conversation short when he discovered I was nearby.”

Amelia sat back, her eyes full of malice.

“Perhaps he has a hidden relationship. That might explain the strange behavior.

Lila paused. “I’m not sure. Maybe. But why wouldn’t he inform me if it is only a romance? He’s never hidden something like that from me before.

“People change, Lila,” Amelia explained, shrugging.

“Maybe he’s serious about this one, and he’s nervous about how you’ll react.”

“Serious enough to keep it a secret?” Lila inquired, her tone suspicious.

Amelia grinned. “Guess there’s only one way to find out.”

Lila’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not about to snoop through his things, if that’s what you’re suggesting.”

“Relax,” Amelia replied, chuckling.

“I was not proposing anything. “But if you ask me, secrets do not remain concealed for long.”He will make a mistake at some point.”

Lila exhaled, her mind still focused on Caleb. She disliked the sensation that something was wrong between them.

Their friendship had always been strong, formed over years of shared laughs, late-night conversations, and brotherly trust. But suddenly she felt a wall had gone up, and she had no idea why.

“I just want to make sure he’s okay,” she whispered quietly, more to herself than Amelia.

Amelia nodded, her face strangely solemn.

“Just… take care, Lila. Sometimes probing too deeply might reveal problems you’re not prepared to deal with.”

Lila did not react. Her gaze refocused on Caleb’s seat, causing a knot to tighten in her stomach. She was desperate to find out what he was concealing.

The next day, Lila leaned against the cold metal of her locker, her stomach churning as Amelia’s smile spread wider.

The fuzzy snapshot on her phone didn’t reveal much, but it did raise concerns that Lila wasn’t sure she wanted answered.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Lila inquired, her tone laced with apprehension.

Amelia rolled her eyes. “Relax, Lila. It’s only some minor detective work. Do you want to know what he’s hiding?

Lila bit her lip, uncertain. “Yeah, but… this feels invasive.”

Amelia shrugged while tapping away on her phone.

“You demanded answers, and I’ve got them. Besides, it’s not like I’m breaking into his life. This is all public information.

Lila groaned and looked around the crowded corridor. The familiar hum of laughing and discussion seemed distant as remorse crept into her chest.

She did not want to breach Caleb’s confidence, but his evasiveness had left her with a lot of questions.

As Lila headed into school the next morning, her phone buzzed ceaselessly. The accumulation of notifications left Lila feeling uneasy. Something wasn’t right.

A student murmured, “Have you heard the news?” as she passed.

Lila froze. She hurriedly took out her phone, her pulse beating as she browsed the school’s notorious anonymous blog.

The post included a high-resolution photo showing Caleb exiting a club with the same person in Amelia’s hazy photograph. The caption reads:

“Caleb’s Secret Romance Revealed!”

Lila looked at the television, her breath seizing. She could feel her peers’ eyes darting toward her, murmurs forming around her like a storm. She wanted to disappear.

Amelia came at her side, dressed way too casually.

“Well, that escalated quickly,” she observed, scanning through the comments section below the post.

Lila gazed at her, rage simmering behind her amazement. “Amelia, you promised you wouldn’t make it public!”

“I didn’t post it,” Amelia said defensively, raising her hands. “Someone must’ve leaked it after I showed them the photo.”

“You showed them?” Lila’s voice increased, her wrath pouring forth.

“Why would you do that?” This was not meant to extend beyond us!”

Amelia puffed. “I didn’t know it was going to blow out. “Don’t be too dramatic.”

Lila’s hands trembled as she pushed her phone back into her pocket.

“Amelia, this isn’t simply some drama. This is Caleb’s life. “You have no idea what you have done.”

Amelia’s grin faded as Lila ran down the corridor, her thoughts racing with fear. She had sought answers, but now she just wanted to undo the harm.

The rooftop garden was peaceful, except for the faint buzz of city traffic below.

Lila paused before approaching Caleb, who was pacing back and forth like a trapped beast.

His phone was clenched tightly in his fingers, and his typically serene face had become pale from tension.

“Caleb,” she whispered quietly, her voice wavering. He did not stop pacing.

When he finally looked at her, his eyes were filled with something she had never seen before: treachery.

“Did you know about this?” He demanded, his tone fierce. “Did you do this?”

Lila’s stomach twisted. She shook her head rapidly, fists up in defense.

“No! I promise, Caleb, I did not intend for this to happen. I requested Amelia to assist me in figuring out who you were seeing, but I didn’t expect her to… I didn’t anticipate that would become public.”

Caleb paused his pacing and turned to face her, his mouth hard.

“You didn’t think?” He spoke, his voice rising.

“Lila, do you know what you’ve done? Drew won’t even speak to me now. He’s afraid his family will find out. “We’ve ruined everything we had.”

Lila felt her chest constrict as tears threatened to fall.

“I’m very sorry, Caleb,” she murmured, her voice shaking. “I didn’t want this to happen. “I did not mean to hurt you.”

He shook his head, his voice softening but still frustrated.

“You did not simply harm me. You also injured him. Do you even know what it’s like to live like this? To continually disguise who you are out of fear of how others may react?”

Lila blinked away tears. She hadn’t considered that—the weight Caleb carries every day.

“I do now,” she muttered. “And I’m very sorry. If I could go back and change anything, I would.”

Caleb breathed deeply and ran a hand over his hair. The fury on his expression faded, giving way to fatigue. “You cannot cure this, Lila. “What’s done is done.”

Lila moved closer, her voice full of desire. “I will do everything it takes to put things right. I will chat with Drew. I will explain everything.

Caleb offered her a mournful grin. “It isn’t so straightforward. You cannot reverse the harm. “But I understand you did not intend for this to happen.”I just need time.”

Lila nodded, her heart aching. “I’m so sorry, Caleb. I love you and would never want to hurt you.”

“I know,” he answered gently, looking back at the metropolitan skyline. “But sometimes sorry isn’t enough.”

Only the faint glow of a table lamp provided a pleasant, subdued illumination in the poorly lit living area.

Caleb sat on the couch, looking at a framed portrait of their family, their smiles frozen in a brighter moment.

Despite his bent shoulders and blank demeanor, the weight he carried was evident.

“Caleb,” Lila whispered gently as she entered the room. Her voice was hesitant, trying not to surprise him.

“I don’t want to talk,” he stated firmly, his gaze never leaving the photograph.

Lila hesitated before moving closer and lying down on the couch next to him. “I know you don’t, but I need to,” she explained, her voice quivering slightly. She clutched her hands together, attempting to balance herself.

“I botched up. My inquisitive nature led me to invade your privacy, and I allowed it to escalate. I didn’t consider how it would affect you.

Caleb eventually turned to face her, his countenance a combination of tiredness and anguish. “You don’t get it, Lila,” he stated softly but firmly.

“Drew wasn’t just the person I was seeing. He was significant to me. And now it’s finished because he’s too terrified to face everything… after what happened.”

Lila’s heart squeezed. Her eyes welled up with tears as she stretched out for his hand. “I can’t change what happened,” she said, her voice cracking.

“I detest that I was the cause of this. But I want you to know that I will always be there for you, no matter what. Caleb, I adore you. And I am so proud of who you are.”

Caleb’s countenance softened, and the strain in his jaw relaxed somewhat. He returned his gaze to her face after looking down at her hand, which was covering his.

“Thanks, Lila,” he responded, his voice full of passion. “It means a lot that you don’t judge me.”

“I never would,” she stated firmly, her eyes unwavering. “You are my brother, Caleb. “That will never change.”

He nodded slowly, a tiny grin breaking through the grief engraved on his features. “It’s going to take time,” he conceded.

“But maybe one day… things will be okay again.”

“They will,” Lila answered confidently, squeezing his hand gently.

“And I’ll do everything I can to help you get there.”

For the first time in days, they had a delicate but genuine sensation of serenity.

They sat in silence, with a photo of their family lying between them as a gentle reminder of their link.
