The Modern Family actor has been cast in the lead role in the forthcoming drama Griselda.

Vergara is most known for her long-running role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett or as a judge on America’s Got Talent, but her new Netflix job is a departure.

The 51-year-old actress plays Griselda Blanco, commonly known as the Columbian “Godmother.”

The new series is based on the true story of a savvy and ambitious lady who founded one of history’s most successful cartels.

“In 1970s-80s Miami, Blanco’s lethal blend of unsuspected savagery and charm helped her expertly navigate between business and family, leading her to become widely known as ‘the Godmother,'” Netflix said about Griselda.

Narcos and Narcos: Mexico creators are behind the new show.

Alongside showrunner Ingrid Escajeda and executive producer Doug Miro, Andrés Baiz and Eric Newman developed Griselda.

Vergara also serves as an executive producer on the six-part series.

Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martín Rodrguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, and Vanessa Ferlito round out the cast.

According to the teaser, Vergara looks different in the part, as she appears to be well-seasoned as the cartel leader.

Aside from that, it’s not the type of role we’re used to seeing the comedian in.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Newman described Griselda as ‘a relative’ to the popular Narcos.

Vergara was allegedly deeply invested in Blanco’s narrative, and she and executive producer Luis Balaguer had been working on it for eight years before Netflix became involved, according to the publication.

“It had a lot of the elements and felt like Narcos to us,” Newman explained, “but we also wanted it to be Sofia’s party.”

“She’s really good at it, and it’s something she’s been working on.” To return to your question about what attracts me or what the common thread is, it’s that type of zeal.”

Vergara made news last summer after divorcing her spouse of nearly seven years, Joe Manganiello.

She told Entertainment Tonight that she has been ‘trying to have fun’ since the news of her divorce broke.

This involves the actress attending two of the year’s most anticipated events: Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

Vergara described Queen Bey as “spectacular!” What a performance! Her daughter, her music, her clothes, her body, everything.”

Griselda will be available on Netflix on January 25, 2024.
