There’s nothing quite like taking a break from the hustle and bustle, but that doesn’t mean we want to leave everything behind. For those of us with pets, having them accompany us on our travels would be ideal.
Now, the prospect of traveling with our furry companions may become a reality, as a major commercial airline has announced plans to allow pets on board. Virgin Airlines is spearheading this initiative, which could launch within the coming year.
If successful, Virgin Airlines will be the first airline in Australia to permit pets in the cabin during flights. This announcement came through a press release titled ‘Cats out the Bag.’

The decision stemmed from a 2021 survey, in which 85% of respondents voted in favor of allowing pets in the cabin. Additionally, 57% expressed a likelihood of becoming more frequent flyers if they could bring their pets along. This move aligns Virgin Airlines with several North American carriers already offering this service on domestic flights.
Jayne Hrdlicka, the CEO, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Our love for animals has always been part of the Virgin Australia DNA, and we are thrilled at the prospect of introducing Australia’s first-ever pets in cabin flights.”
She assured that allowing pets in the cabin would not affect the accommodation of assistance animals, which can travel at no cost. Small dogs and cats that can fit under the seat in front of the passenger will be permitted, using approved carriers to ensure safety during the flight. While a fee will be charged, the exact amount has not yet been disclosed.
Following the announcement, inquiries arose regarding potential allergies and seating arrangements. In response, Virgin Atlantic emphasized their commitment to minimal disruption for non-pet-carrying passengers, promising strict rules and careful planning to address these concerns.
