Johnny Cash, one of the most renowned singers of all time, hosted a popular television show in the 1970s where he invited bands to perform live. On November 5th, 1970, “Derek and the Dominoes” performed as the show’s musical guest. Before becoming a successful solo musician, Eric Clapton was a member of a band named Derek and the Dominos.
This decades-old tape sounds clean and clear like a modern recording. The band performed two terrific tunes, “It’s Too Late,” with just Eric and the lads before Johnny joined them all for a rousing version of “Matchbox.”
Johnny Cash interviews Eric Clapton after the concert, and they discuss how blues artists in the United States influenced the sound of British bands.
Clapton claims that there isn’t much music in Britain, so they acquire recordings from the United States. Johnny then informed Clapton that he was overjoyed that the audience was so welcoming to the band. Then there is a surprise. Clapton tells Johnny that one of the finest blues musicians in the business should come out and sing with them, and they present the legendary Carl Perkins.
Carl takes the stage and plays with the rest of the gang. The crowd goes crazy when they sing the hit song “Matchbox.” The combination of electric and acoustic guitars produces an amazing sound.
During the event, Johnny Cash appears bashful and reticent, so it’s wonderful to see him join in and sing with the band and Carl Perkins. Note: This video contains two tracks. We’ve set it to play precisely as the song begins with Johnny Cash, but Clapton lovers may want to rewind to watch the entire performance.
