At America’s Got Talent, a scared, pudgy youngster squinting under the glaring lights and trembling her hands like leaves in the wind stepped center stage. She struggled with a cruel environment as a Dominican Republic native transported to the U.S. at four years old. The accent made her a target. People made fun of her weight. Everything that set her apart became a weapon against her. But music? She found refuge in music. Next came the moment. Aretha Franklin’s Natural Woman’s opening notes altered everything. The terror subsided. Self-doubt evaporated.

The immigrants who reside here frequently prove that the American ideal is alive and thriving.
Since its founding, people have come to the U.S. seeking a better life so their children can have the best chance. This is the ultimate aspiration of every parent. This happened to 15-year-old Amanda Mena’s family. The gifted vocalist was born in the Dominican Republic and migrated to the U.S. at four.

Amanda entered school without a word of English but mastered it through hard work and persistence. Harsh youngsters mistreated her, but music gave her strength.
She performed on “America’s Got Talent” recently to show the nation her talent. The crowd got up when the music started.

Amanda appeared like a typical teen at the mic. She was lovely, bright-eyed, and had braces. Even though she’s shy, the girl held her cool, demonstrating she’s strong.

Before singing, she told the judges about her immigration story and how music has always been her happy place, even in trying times. Aretha Franklin’s powerful ballad “Natural Woman” began with those sounds. An unrecognizable voice emerged from the little girl’s mouth. Her skill and control impressed the judges instantly. It sounded like she had been singing for 30 years.

Every audience member jumped up and clapped for the aspiring singer during the two-minute audition. Even hard-to-please Simon Cowell was astonished. “This is an audition we’ll remember for a long time,” he remarked. When Amanda asked Mel B for her thoughts, she was nearly dumbfounded. She told Amanda she felt goosebumps and had a message for the bullies who made the teen’s life so miserable.

She broke the golden buzzer and sent the astonished vocalist to the live performances!
